"Kamote packs a powerful nutritional punch. Over 400% of your daily needs for vitamin A in one medium spud."

Sweet Potatoes Types

You might've noticed the wide selection of potatoes at the grocery store as of late. There are actually more than 4,000 varieties of spuds, each with its own specific texture and taste.

If you're not sure what you're looking at, you probably skip the unfamiliar types -- their wonky shapes and strange names can be intimidating and stick to the standard russet, red, white and sweet potatoes. There's nothing wrong with that, but there's a world of potatoes out there that's totally worth discovering.

Garnet

SKIN – Redish/Dark Orange..

FLESH – Orange.

TASTE – Mildly sweet, and pretty moist inside.

Garnet yams are slender, ovate and cylindric in shape, tapering at the ends. They have a rough semi thick skin with a pale salmon color. The flesh is golden orange, moist and starchy. The flesh's color turns a vibrant golden yellow cooked. Its flavor is sweet and its starchy textures allows it to absorb accompanying ingredients' flavors.

Jewel

SKIN – Orange/copper. I find it really hard to tell garnet and jewel sweet potatoes apart because their coloring is fairly similar both inside and outside. To me, it seems that garnets are slightly more redish in color on the outside.

FLESH – Deep orange.

TASTE – Mildly sweet and fairly firm inside.

Jewel yams are ovate and cylindric in shape, tapering at the ends. They have a rough semi thick skin with a rose hued pale orange color. The flesh is brilliant orange, moist and starchy. The flesh's vibrant color increases when cooked. Its flavor is sweet and its starchy textures allows it to absorb accompanying ingredients' flavors.

Japanese

SKIN – Purple and fairly smooth. Generally more round (“fatter”) than the Stokes purple sweet potatoes, which are more elongated.

FLESH – Whitish flesh that turns golden when baked.

TASTE – Very sweet and fairly firm inside.

The Japanese yam is unlike a sweet potato in its skin color and flesh. It is roughly oblong in shape with a thin, rusted red colored skin, and a densely textured cream colored flesh. The flesh is dry, starchy and subtly sweet. The skin retains the bitter flavor of the root and it is recommended to peel the potato prior to eating.

Purple

SKIN – Deep purple.

FLESH – Deep purple.

TASTE – Not very sweet, and pretty dry inside.

The Stokes Purple® Sweet potato has a rugged purple skin and vibrant purple flesh. It is firm and dense, more so than a typical sweet potato and offers a different taste as well. The flesh is drier and has a lower moisture content than most sweet potato varieties. The Stokes Purple® is not as sweet as as their orange counterparts.

Hannah

SKIN – Cream colored and pretty smooth.

FLESH – Cream/whitish colored that becomes yellow when baked.

TASTE – Pretty sweet and fairly firm inside (Hannah sweet potatoes are considered a dry or firm sweet potato meaning that the flesh is pretty firm and dry when cooked).

The Hannah Sweet Potato, also known as the Yellow Hannah, or Sweet Hannah is an off-white, tan/creamy Sweet Potato with a yellowish tender flesh. It has an oblong shape and a semi-smooth skin. It is a Dry Sweet Potato.

Other Types

There are other types of sweet potatoes that wasn't included in the list. The list are for the most commonly or readily available in the market. Like the one listed sweet potatoes comes in various shades of creamy white, yellow-orange, tan, reddish-purple and red.

Allan S: Kamote Hub was originally made with coffee as the website theme, almost the same title just "Coffee Hub" Changed it out of impulse and for the kicks. Made using foundation zurb as frontend frameworks and jquery for the backend frameworks. Project presentation for Web1

Inihaw na Sabaw: Change it back, Coffee is much more interesting. It'll hold more information than creating a website for sweet potatoes

Allan S: No time to revert the changes, Bare with it plox.

Crispy Lugaw: No penguins or Eskimos? It's almost christmass lol. Change it to something more fitting for this season
