WILD FLOWERS OF THE ALGARVE
SOUTHERN PORTUGAL

AUTUMN

October, November & December

Autumn Crocus
Colchicum autumnale

Becaue of the mild climate of the Algarve this time of the year is like spring. After the long hot months the first rains fall. Immediately plants will respond, the countryside will green and here and there flowers will start to bloom. The earlier the rain the more prolific will be the growth. Flowers which would normally only appear in January and February start to bloom. This is also the time of year trees and bushes will produce fruit. It is a good time to identify these plants which do not have conspicuous flowers. Check ALGARVE SHRUBS for sketches of the common fruiting trees and bushes.

The wild flowers growing from the end of June to mid-September are illustrated and described in the following pages. Flowers have been colour coded for easy identification.

BLUE FLOWERS

YELLOW FLOWERS

WHITE AND GREEN FLOWERS

PURPLE, VIOLET AND LILAC FLOWERS
