Activities:

  • Class discussion to activate prior knowledge: What is a community and what are the responsibilities of its citizens?
  • Introduce new idea: Each student is part of a global community with a responsibility to protect the earth.
  • Listen to Shel Silverstein’s Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout
  • Review issue from the poem.
  • Watch BrainPop Video “Where Does Your Garbage Go?”
  • Garbage and waste activity – Show individually wrapped snacks and discuss packaging. Ex. Potato Chips, Juice Boxes, Twinkies.
  • Fill out Worksheet “What Did You Have for Dinner Last Night?” Use this example as a model.
  • Discuss classes’ total amount of waste generated. Estimate how much space that amount of trash would take up the classroom. Multiply that number by 365 to get a total for the year.

Collect “What Did You Have For Dinner Last Night” worksheet and review for student understanding.

Tuesday

Activities:

·        Review previous day’s lesson. What is our responsibility to the community?

  • Introduce new idea: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
  • Watch PBS Kids video “Garbage and Recycling.”
  • Assign students to small groups of 4-5. Using this handout as a guide, brainstorm ideas to reduce, reuse and recycle the given household and school items. Have a class discussion about small group work.

1. Observe student participation during small group work

2. Exit card:

“List three things we could do to reduce, reuse, or recycle in our classroom.”

 Wednesday

Activities:

  • Virtual Field Trip
  • Assign students to small groups of 4-5 to share what they learned from the Virtual Field Trip. 

 

 

 

 

 

Technology:

Formative:
Class discussion. Members from each group will share their discussion with the rest of the class (what they learned, what they want to know more about, etc.)

 Thursday

Formative:

Students will write a paragraph about their assigned role in the WebQuest. They will include a description of their character and something they have learned in their research so far.

Friday

Activities

  • Review: What have we learned this week about protecting the earth and taking care of our community?
  • Family Action Plan: Students will create a Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle family action plan that they will implement at home.

 

Summative:

The Family Action Plan will be graded with a rubric.

 

Next week:

Students will complete their WebQuests and present their posters to

the class. Posters will be graded according to the rubric provided with the

WebQuest (summative).
