Fundamental of VoIP and Security

CHAPTER NO.8

VIII.FUTURE OF VOIP TECHNOLOGY: The future of VoIP technology is looking very promising as new dimensions are being explored and enhancements offered to customers. When VoIP technology was first developed, many people were skeptical, mainly because it sounded too good to be true. However, as time has passed and this technology has proven itself time after time, these same people are now realizing that the future of VoIP technology is indeed solid.   VoIP technology has already made advancements that are catching business owners interest. In addition to making long-distance calls all around the world for little to no money, this technology is always on the move, introducing new features. For example, once considered a future aspect of VoIP technology, SIP has now come to fruition. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) retrieves server responses and handles client requests. This technology is able to determine the end system that will be used for a communication session, automatically sets the appropriate parameters at both ends of the Communication, and then manages both call transfer and call termination. Additionally, SIP allows users to initiate and receive communication from any location. It allows networks to identify the user, regardless of where they are. This technology is an alternative to H.323, which is the protocol, used for IP videoconference transmissions used for the past decade.

IX.CONCLUSION

An organization is said to be a successful if and only if it utilizes all communication resources efficiently. Usually there are many different ways of communication which are available now days. When we analyze the entire above communication channel we find that we prefer those communication channels that fulfill the requirement and essential components are security, fast, easy to available, easy to use, cheap and give more advanced services, easy to maintain, easy to install etc. Although PSTN and cell phone provide almost all services but when we compare cost of PSTN phone or cell phone with VoIP phone we find VoIP is the best technology to implement. Most of the telecommunication companies implanted their call centers by the using of VoIP technology. Therefore we can say that VoIP phone give equal opportunity to small or large size firms.

These are the primary reason of choosing VoIP to analyze. When we consider VoIP applications in general which will probably become more widely used as time evolves. Currently the biggest issue for such applications is the lack of QoS guarantees. When QoS supporting protocols like RSVP are used on a larger scale, this will certainly make VoIP more popular since people can then communicate with the quality that they desire. On LANs where there is normally plenty of bandwidth VoIP applications can already be used with little or no problems. However on a larger scale, like the Internet, such QoS providing protocols will be necessary to make VoIP applications perform effectively.

In this thesis we try to give some basics knowledge regarding VoIP Technology our intended reader are who do not know about VoiP technology and we have discussed two major standards like H.323 and SIP make interoperability between applications of different developers possible. This way, people can choose from a variety of VoIP applications and use the ones they like the most. In turn, this will stimulate the use of VoIP. Also, since more applications will be developed, the possibilities of these applications will keep growing and improving.

Our point of view VoIP technology is still at the early stage, the attacks against VoIP deployment have been largely expanded. The task of protecting VoIP is more complicated than in PSTN, the challenge to improve security service touches many areas, from encryption algorithm to key management, from hardware deployment to software, protocol design, from underlying network security to VoIP key component protection, VoIP resource allocation, etc. As VoIP increases in popularity and number of end users, there will be more and more potential attacks. Besides the vulnerabilities exploited in thesis, there are still many vulnerabilities need to be discovered in the area of VoIP. It is important to prevent these vulnerabilities from being used by the attackers. Thus, further research has to be done within each area. Further more to protect VoIP system a good security policy is necessary to take it for the end user to implement it. The security policy of VoIP should include every specific VoIP needs. The security for a VoIP system should begin with a solid security in the network and load of the VoIP system should be allocated properly by the network and VoIP components to ensure the proper resources are available, analyzing risks for each component and process needs to identify the vulnerabilities and threats which will provide the information which is needed to determine the proper security measures. Since every security solution is a double side sword, therefore, keeping balance between security and the business requirements is important to successfully implement VoIP.

In the future, the protocols will be better, bandwidth will be enough and more economical, and security will be enhanced, all these features will build a bright future for VoIP.
