Fundamental of VoIP and Security

    CHAPTER NO.1

 I. INTRODUCTION

Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) refers to the transmission of speech across data-style networks. This form of transmission is conceptually superior to conventional circuit switched communication in many ways. However, overabundances of security issues are associated with still-evolving VOIP technology. This thesis introduces Fundamental of VOIP and its security challenges specially; SIP protocol, H.323 protocol, Quality of Service (QoS), Firewall, Security Breaches like: Disruption, Access and Privacy of VoiP System and prospective countermeasures for VOIP vulnerabilities.

 A.  MOTIVATION

VoiP has a very bright future because this technology has significant feature that make this technology very important for future telephony Cost factor, Reliability, Integrity that gives Strength to this technology. Integration of VoIP capabilities into the existing Monterey Security Architecture MYSEA architecture is highly Desirable for both economical and management reasons. Deploying VoIP greatly reduces the cost of making short and long distance calls from the MLS LAN to an external network such as the Internet. Management of telephone systems in the MLS LAN can also be simplified with the use of VoIP as rewiring phones for roaming users is no longer needed. Thus extending MYSEA to include VoIP is beneficial. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is becoming a popular and worth to set up technology. Currently three millions householders use VoIP. It has been estimated that the number will be increased to twenty-seven million by the end of 2010. This estimation is applied for whole the world not only an specific city or country. Furthermore companies and public sector organizations are expected to invest into the VoIP technology in future. This indicates that VoIP continues to grow in popularity and remains a promising telecommunication technology that will gradually replace traditional PSTN phone systems to VioP.

 B.  ORGANIZATION

This Thesis consists of Nine Chapters. Chapter number two covers Discovery of VoiP Phone and PSTN, Importance of VoiP, Advantages and Disadvantages. Chapter number three Fundamental of VoiP covers Basics of VoiP Security, how to work with VoiP, Basics Hardware Equipment that are necessary for VoiP System. Chapter number four is very important in this thesis and this Chapter covers two important VoiP protocol SIP (Session initialization protocol) and H.323 Overview, Characteristics, Architecture and other issues. In Chapter number five it covers Quality of Service and three important issues are Jitter, Latency and Packet Loss. Chapter number six is about Security Breaches that has three significant security Breaches i.e. Access, Disruption, Privacy.

Chapter number eight is Network Element that covers six important Basic issues that are DoS (Denial of Service Attack), Viruses and Worms, Trojan horse, Physical Security, E-911, 802.11 and power outages and the last Chapter number nine covers the future of VoiP and Security. Finally the conclusion portion is covered.
