5mgte Exhaust

The 7mgte turbo exhaust manifold bolts directly to the 5mge head. You can even use your stock 5m/6m exhaust manifold studs. I opted for some 17mm bolts, since we all know those stock studs can be a pain sometimes. You must grind off a small portion of the turbo manifold in order to clear the power steering pump bracketry in the 5mge engine bay. Use the old 5mge exhaust manifold gasket as a pattern. Five minutes worth of work with a grinder should do the trick. Here are a few pics. The second compares the stock 5mge exhaust manifold with the 7mgte turbo manifold. Both manifolds were ceramic coated.

Aside from grinding on the 7mgte manifold, you should also fabricate an exhaust manifold support of some type, since the stock 7mgte support won't bolt up to your 5m block. In the next picture, note the position of the 7mgte manifold support. The two bolts shown in the lower left portion of the picture are for the stiffener brackets that bolt to the bell housing. You could also fabricate an exhaust manifold support (turbo stay) that bolts to this location. Another reason you cannot use the 7mgte turbo stay is due to the location of the 5m/6m oil pressure sending unit, which will not fit behind the piece.

You'll most likely have to do custom work for a turbo downpipe. I lucked out and got a good deal on a HK$ mk3 downpipe from Jake Reed. He had it on his turbocharged mk2, so the work had already been done for me. In the next pic, you can see how the mandrel bent downpipe was modified. I had to do some of my own modifications to my existing 2.25 inch exhaust system so it would work with the HK$ hybrid. If you purchase a mk3 HK$ turbo downpipe, you shouldn't have to do any modifications to it at all if you're going to use it with a new custom exhaust system. Currently, my car has a flowmaster muffler. It is much quieter now that the turbo has been installed. It sounds great. If you are concerned about the oxygen sensor not being able to reach your wiring harness.....well.....don't be! It will reach just fine. You can use your stock 5mge 02 sensor (bolts right into the turbo elbow). Although the wire is long enough, you may want to lengthen it, and route it differently for aesthetic reasons.
