Destiny is a loot based shooter developed by Bungie and published by Activision. Both titles take place in a universe based off of our own, several hundred hears into the future. In this universe, humanity is on the brink of extinction following an apocalyptic event that took place a long while before the events of the first game. The last of humanity resides below a dormant benevolent entity know as the “Traveller”. Within this universe, the player will undertake the role of a Guardian; a human that has been risen from the dead due to possessing exceptional attunement to a power known as ‘the light’.
The primary gameplay element is combat. Specifically, a combat system comprised of shooting and abilities. Weapons are obtained through exploration and defeating a myriad of powerful enemies. Abilities are based on your character’s class and are unlocked through a combination of exploration and experience. While not completely inspired, the way in which these elements work together during gameplay imposes a refreshing twist on old gameplay elements.
A race that was also once under the protection of the Traveller. Renowned scavengers, they generally rely on trickery in order to defeat their foes. They depend on a substance known as ether for sustenance, which is produced by servitors which double as sentries within their ranks (alongside their lesser shank sentries).
A species with close ties to the darkness. They are an abhorrent race fueled by a single purpose: to destroy. The strength of a hive combatant is wholly dependent on how much sustinence they have derived from the death of their allies, and can vary from pitiful thrall to humungous ogres.
The Vex are a mechanical race who’s origins are a mystery, and far predate the existence of humanity. While each member of the species exists as an individual entity, they appear to fulfill a single purpose: to create a future in which the Vex are the last living sentient race. They aim to achieve this through converting of planetary bodies into supercomputers that work towards simulating alternate timelines and realities.
A warrior race from the outer reaches of the solar system. Their primary objective is to conquer. As soldiers, they have orders from their home planet never to return unless they return victorious. You will see the least variation from Cabal soldiers. They are generally more defensive than other races and are far more militaristic in nature. Curiously, among their ranks exist units that are considerably smaller and display a form of psychic ability that no other cabal unit is capable of.
While this race did not exist from the beginning of Destiny’s conception, they have become just as prevalent within the world’s plot as every other race and have been a staple since conception.
They are probably the most unusual of all the enemy races, in the sense that, they are a conglomeration of every enemy race. The Taken consist of enemy units that have been twisted and reshaped through dark practices are bound to the will of their superiors. The true origins of the Taken are a mystery, however, they are considered to be the closest manifestation of pure darkness within the solar system.
