POSAUNE PROFILE (Alumni) January / February 2003 Dave Cannon '84
Dave studied
with Ron Borror from 1980 until 1984 at the North Carolina School for the Arts and is
currently living in Olney, Maryland with his wife Dianne and two children Matthew age six
and daughter Allison age four. Dave has
performed with Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, Roy Clark, Rosemary Clooney, Joe Williams
and was a member of The Washington Redskins Professional Band. After
graduation in 1984, he traveled the U.S. with a band called The Spurrlows as a
Band Director and Trombonist. The band consisted of two trumpets, two trombones, rhythm
section and eight vocalists. In the fall of
1985, he moved back to the Washington, DC area and is currently working as freelance
trombonist. In 1995,
Dave graduated from The Omega Studios School of the Recording Arts and Sciences with
a Certificate in Audio Engineering. He became a staff-recording engineer at Omega
Recording Studios in Rockville, Maryland in 1995. He
won a Grammy Certificate in 2000 for recording the Grammy award-winning album entitled
Christmas with Shirley Caesar and has worked as an engineer. He has recording
some of the areas finest trombonists at over the past seven years including, Harry Waters,
Matt Niece, and Dave Steinmeyer. He has
performance credits on Walter Salbs Time Was Orchestra CD recorded in
1993 and Radio King Orchestras Put A Little Boogie in My Stocking CD
recorded in 2000. Dave claims
the highlight of career as a trombonist was playing the sold out Aretha Franklin
concert at Wolf Trap 2002 with Dave Steinmeyer playing the lead part. Mr. Steinmeyer is a world class guy as well as a
world class trombonist. In the fall
of 2002, I started teaching piano and guitar at the local high school. He plans on going
back to school to obtain a teaching certificate. His
goal is to develop a Music Technology curriculum on the high school level and work with
the instrumental music department as a Band Director or Brass coach. He is still
actively playing as the trombonist for the band Invitation. He also enjoys playing solos on occasion for
church worship services.
