Introduction
Information Technology So Far
Early computers demonstrated software as an after-thought.
Mainframe era was shaken up by Personal Computer systems.
Many interdisciplinary activities resulted in
the evolution of Networked system support resulting into a shift from 'centralized'
to 'distributed' approach over LANs. In the last five decades, the development
of IT has received vocabulary contribution from the practitioners from
variety of fields ranging from Engineers, Doctors, Financial Accountants,
Architects, Packager etc.
(engine, virus & vaccine, software audit,
architecture, shrink wrapping). This has resulted in introduction of 'jargon'
in the IT literature and standard texts.
Problems of Existing Approaches
Unfortunately, today's Technology does not provide for this. MISNOS stresses on evolving such technology. Thus, in the last 5-6 decades, we have seen that the IT revolved around people as user/developer regime. It neglected the cultural aspects and just dumped the technology "as-is-where-is' form on the people. Masses were forced to learn and equip themselves with IT to fall in the elite group of IT-literates. This trend will see its downfall soon. The impact of social & cultural aspects in various sectors is of utmost importance when we consider information for masses. Thus, the range from youth to senior citizens is to be covered and it cannot be done without associating them in the development process. MISNOS keeps these things as the goals and objectives while discussing DECIT and STERI methodologies. The need is thus brought out for sincere efforts towards 'Vernacular Computing'.
Another important aspect of Information for masses is involving & associating women through community centers. The success of such approaches in the past in Indian Environment through the Sewing Machine oriented methodologies has been so much that even in the contemporary Indian cinemas of yesteryears, these have been depicted. Community Centers will be catalysts for such a role in IT. MISNOS technology development itself could be a boon for such an effort towards economic growth and progress. Instead of resorting to the 'jargons' created by a section of practitioners, MISNOS philosophy involves masses for introducing the accepted 'jargon standards'; thus, eases the adaptability from social & cultural viewpoint.
