Just as your brain tells your body parts how to function and work together, the software governs the way computers in the network communicate with each other and perform functions.
Software that enables networking follows a set of rules that are generally referred to as a protocol. Protocols allow the network to share data and programs and exchange documents, electronic mail, video and sound images. By following the rules established by the Network the information does not get lost or distorted when it moves from one computer to another.
Protocols may allow groups on the network to coordinate an manage projects by exchanging electronic mail, schedule meetings online, participate in online discussions and share corporate information. Two examples of this type of stoftware are Lotus Notes and Novell Groupwise.
