The members of the SLOWERTHAN... line are:
1) Cathy "Gillikan" Jones - #1
2) Deborah "Brickhouse" Clarke - #2
3) Angela "Sukar Bear" Surcey (Garner) - #3
Our line began during the first week of April with twelve (12) eager young ladies! We were then FELINES as we had not been groomed to KAPPA KITTEN potential just yet. Although, as a pledged member of the KAPPA ALPHA PSI KITTEN KLUB, I can not explain the pledging rituals of the fraternity's klub, I CAN give you a brief overview of how we krossed over with only THREE FEARLESS LADIES!
We had a "MAMA KITTEN" who's name was DELORES HUNT ("Dee"). Our "DADDY KAPPA" was ALVIN BARRINGTON ("A.B."). 'A.B.' is the present advisor for the THETA ETA CHAPTER of KAPPA ALPHA PSI. Our Polemarch during that time was MICHAEL "BULLET" McQUEEN, who we lovingly called, "DADDY BULLET," but he was not very receptive to that name. These were the main persons, along with each KAPPA and KITTEN from the THETA ETA CHAPTER, who were responsible for our growth into full-pledged KITTENS! These other KAPPAS and KITTENS were lovingly called "BIG BROTHERS" and "BIG SISTERS." I can't explain the details, but it was a HARD ROAD TO TRAVEL!
We began with a large, strong, line of twelve young ladies! For the first week, we managed to keep each other together and remain strong in the bond, but then one night, we met a large group of Kappas and Kittens from the ALPHA XI CHAPTER of KAPPA ALPHA PSI (at FAMU) who had come over to meet us. We lost three young ladies that night. I guess the other two had to sleep on it because the next day, when we all got together, our line had dropped to SEVEN. Okay, we figured, seven is a good number...WE CAN DO THIS!!!
Two weeks passed, pledging became MORE INTENSE! One night, after meeting with our big brothers and big sisters at THETA ETA, we took a hike over to the KAPPA HOUSE at ALPHA XI! THAT DID IT!!! This was the night when FINAL DECISIONS were made! The seven of us had bonded well, so we thought, but pledging can MAKE YOU or BREAK YOU...it BROKE four more young ladies! Two left during the "FUN-TIME;" I guess the other two tried to hang in there, but the next day, they put us down!
Now, down to the FEARLESS THREE, we VOWED that NO MATTER WHAT, we would hang in there to become affiliated with the BEST FRAT IN THE WORLD as KAPPA KITTENS! IT WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS I'VE EVER MADE, and we almost lost Cathy (Kitten #1), but Deborah and I made her realize that she had come TOO FAR to turn back now!
Once we became PERSIANS (during "hell-week"), we met with obstacles and trials that we thought would make us GIVE UP...BUT WE HUNG IN THERE! During that time, we were pledged daily by both chapters and if you can imagine the mental anxiety that we were faced with (we were still students in school), you may be able to understand why the last week was so hard. But the day FINALLY CAME! We had NO IDEA that we were FINALLY going to become a part of the KAPPA FAMILY!
That was a WONDERFUL day!!! To know that we had beat the odds, had learned what our BIG BROTHERS and BIG SISTERS wanted us to know, and that we had become KAPPA ALPHA PSI KITTENS was THE BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD! Wherever my wonderful line sisters, Cathy and Deborah are, I WILL LOVE THEM FOREVER as I will ALL KAPPAS, KITTENS, DIAMONDS, or other PLEDGED affiliations, and the BOND remains strong, even after twenty years. ONCE A KITTEN, ALWAYS A KITTEN, so, UNTIL THE DAY I DIE...
PIC 1) This pic features my Kitten sister Cylenthia, my Kappa brother-Charles "Krunchy" Mack, and my line sister #1 - Cathy. Cylenthia played a BIG part in the pledging of SLOWERTHAN...; she was a "most honorable" BIG SISTER because she was one of the main Theta Eta Kittens that made us! Both Cylenthia and "Krunchy" are originally from Jacksonville, so they were HOME FOLK, you KNOW that they were hard on me! When we were pledging, "Big Brother Krunchy" put the fear of GOD into us!!! I won't go into the details, but you better believe, when "Krunchy" was "in da house," YOU KNEW IT!!! Cathy was the quiet one. She was tiny, but she could take care of herself. She wasn't as 'outgoing' as Deborah and I were, but she is a KAPPA KITTEN in every sense of the word! Her line name "Gilligan," remained even after we crossed over.
PIC 2) This pic features Kappa Kitten #2-Deborah Clarke! Deborah was my best friend until "life's little problems" took us our separate ways. She taught me more about life, friendship, and sisterhood than most people realized. We experienced MANY, MANY situations together and were considered 'inseparable' during that time. I still love and miss her to this day. Her line name was "Jellyfish" but her Kitten nickname was "Brickhouse!"
PIC 3) Finally, there's ME, Kitten #3, back in 'the day!' I wore my hair 'reddish-blonde' because I wanted to be different. That has always been my forte'. I have always preferred my own style which was usually different from everyone else's. My line name was "DooBee." That name was given to me by by "Big Sister Pam" who was Krunchy's girlfriend. She was almost as frightening as he was when we were pledging. She gave me that name because, whenever there was a task for my line sisters and I to complete, I usually initiated the process. The name comes from an extinct children's morning show in which the hostess used pictures of "bees" to illustrate that staying 'busy' was a good thing. The 'DO-Bee' was the busiest because that bee tried to complete every task in a timely manner. That was my position for SLOWERTHAN...! I will NEVER forget those days as long as I live! Becoming a Kappa Kitten was definitely a high point in my life!

PIC 4) introduces brothers CLARENCE DASHER and ALFRED WILLIAMS, both from the THETA ETA "SPIRIT OF '76" line. They are featured with one of the beautiful, smart, and ambitious ladies of the ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA Sorority whose name is Sharon.

PIC 5) features my brother AL (Alfred Williams) and me. Of all of our wonderful brothers at THETA ETA, Al was the sweetest. He was ALWAYS nice and very much a gentleman. He never gave us any hassles when we were pledging. He was usually always around when the cameras started clicking :-)!

PIC 6) features another picture of my Kappa brother "Krunchy" shown with a young man who is a member of the ALPHA PHI ALPHA Fraternity. During those days, the 'black' greek fraternities and sororities presented a 'united front' on many occasions.
