Joinery The door parts are held together with mortise and slip tenon construction. The slip tenons are milled from scrap and dimensioned to 1/2" thick by 4" long by 2-1/2" wide. A router with a 1/4" radius bit is used to roundover the edges of the tenons to the shape of the mortise.
Marking Mortises The positions of the mortises are marked on the face of the parts when the first dry fit of the door is made. The small green "Avery Label" dots are used to indicate the best face of the material, and help to keep the parts oriented during the machining
Height and Depth A machinist scale is used to set the height of the cutter from the mortiser table. The depth is marked on the end of a cutoff from the stile blanks and the stop under the table is locked in place.
Milling a Mortise With a 1/2" straight router bit mounted in the chuck, the mortises are milled to a depth of 2-1/4" from the face of the parts. After transferring the mortise location marks to the edge of the parts, the length of the mortise is set using using the stop rods on the mortising table.
