Raising the Panel Edges With the ends of the panels raised, the sides are next.  Note how the end grain tear-out has been eliminated from the near corner of the panel shown at the left. 

Fence settings To reduce the amount of tearout along the edges of the part, the fence is moved very close to the cutter.  The pictures to the right and below show the fence to be about 1/16" away from the cutter. 

Caution!  The shaper is a powerful machine. Be sure to double check all holding devices and screws before applying power to the shaft.  A loose bonnet can cause the fence to move into the cutter, and possibly cause the destruction of the cutter, the part and the fence in seconds. Develop a habit of checking these devices every time you start the shaper.
