Ferrets are smart animals and can be trained to use a litter box, which will make their living environment cleaner, and your life easier. Ferrets almost always will relieve themselves in a corner, so one of the easiest ways to train a ferret to use a litter box is to let them choose a corner, and then place the litter box in that corner. Then use positive reinforcement and reward them with a special treat when they use the litter box. Ferrets will not often go back inside their cage to use a litter box so there should be one litter box inside the cage, and at least one outside of their cage. Clean up accidents quickly with vinegar or an enzyme product to get rid of the smell so your ferrets will not mistake that area for their bathroom. You can also lay towels down that have been used for your ferret's bedding so they will recognize that area as a sleep area, and not their bathroom.
There are a few litters that are made especially for ferrets but can be quite costly. What I have found to be the best and most cost effective is wood pellets used for a wood pellet stove that can be purchased at a hardware store for $3.50 for a 40 pound bag. It may be harder to find for people that live in warmer climates but if you can find them, I would highly recommend using them. They are basically condensed sawdust that when wet, turn back into sawdust. They are highly absorbent and cheap.
Some litters I would not recommend are clay litters that clump and wood shavings. The clay litters can get stuck up their noses or worse, their butts, and can cause urinary tract infections. Ferrets also have sensitive respiratory systems so the dust from wood shavings can damage their system.
