Food

There is an ongoing debate between ferret owners about which food is best for their pet.  As the popularity of ferrets has increased, the availability of ferret food has also increased.  Premium Ferret Diet (Marshall Pet Products) and Totally Ferret (Performance Foods) are foods designed especially for ferrets.  Some ferret owners feed their pet high quality cat or kitten food, such as Iams or Science Diet kitten formulas.  The most important thing to do is closely examine the ingredients panel on the back of the package to make sure everything your ferret needs is there.  Active ferrets require a diet with at least 32% protein, 20% or more fat, no more than 2% fiber, and since they are carnivores, the first ingredient should be meat or poultry.  Ferrets 4 years or older may require a lower protein and fat diet to avoid becoming overweight.
Treats are also fun to feed your ferret, but not necessary if they're fed the right diet.  There are vitamin supplements, such as Ferretone and Linatone, that ferrets love.  Some treats I've found that ferrets like are raisins, bananas, and cheerios.  Treats are beneficial in training your ferret and are fun to give, but they should be given in moderation.  It is important that they are hungry enough to eat their own food so they get the nutrition they need.
