as one of their 'bright young men'. While there he developed a machine
that would pick up a telegraph signal and amplify it and send it on to
the next station. Prior to the development of this machine, telegrams had
to be relayed thru 'relay operators'. In reward for the multi-million cost
savings, WU gave him a $25 savings bond and the job of overseeing the installation
of these machines throughout the country. While traveling, he wrote Redrock
Mountain as well as carrying on correspondence with many friends. I am
fortunate to have his original typed copy of Redrock Mountain and a notebook
of correspondence with Millie Treat, who was in an Omaha, Nebraska TB sanitorium.

Ernest was born in Newark, NY and at the age of 19 he moved to Saltie,
VA. When the Civil War came along, even though Ernest lived in Virginia,
his two brothers lived and fought for the north. Ernest was exempted from
serving with
the southern forces because of his vital job(heading a salt factory)
but soon moved to New York. After the war he returned to Varginia, where
he married in 1880 and then returned to Iowa in 1883. A year later the
family returned to
Virginia where they lived until 1897, when they then moved to California.
In 1898 they returned to Emmettsburg where they remained. Ernest and Laura
had seven children. All except Virginia, who died in infancy survive him.
Mr. Middleton was employed most of his working life by the salt works in
Saltville, VA. He and his wife retired to Emmetsburg, IA.

.DIED.
MIDDLETON - In this city, March 29th, Hon. George H. Middleton, in
the 59th year of his age.
Funeral services at his late residence, corner of Willow and Townsend
streets, Thursday, the 21st inst. at 2 'clock p.m. Friends of the family
are invited to attend.
DEATH OF JUDGE MIDDLETON - Under the obituary head will be found a notice of the death of Hon. Geo. H. Middleton. Judge M. formerly resided in Wayne county, where he held the office of First Judge for one term, besides other positions of trust and responsibility. He was also once a candidate for Congress, in the District composed of Wayne and Cayuga. Removing to this city about ten years ago, he has since made Syracuse his residence. Last spring he was the Union candidate for Justice of the Peace, but with the rest of the ticket defeated. Of considerable literary culture, exemplary in conduct and gentlemanly in all his intercourse with others, his death leaves an "aching void" in the community
BAR MEETING - A largely attended meeting of the Bar was held yesterday afternoon at he Court House, to adopt measures suitable to the occasion of the death of the late Judge Middleton. Hon. James R Lawrence was called to Chair, and Finley M. King elected Secretary.
On motion of Geo. N. Kennedy, Esp., a committee of three was appointed to draft resolutions, consisting of Geo. N. Kennedy, B. Davis Noxon and Wm. J. Hough.
The committee retired, and on returning presented, through Mr. Kennedy, their chairman, the following report:
Whereas, It has pleased an all-wise Providence, in the execution of
His inscrutable purposes to take from us, in the midst of his usefulness,
our much esteemed professional brother and friend, we, while humbly bowing
in submission to the will of the Most High, cannot refrain from the expression
of our sorrow for the sad bereavement; therefore,
Resolved, That we tender to the sorrowing widow and suffering children
of our deceased friend our heartfelt sympathy in their great bereavement,
and pray them to remember that a good God hath promised protection to the
fatherless, and that to Him consolation can alone be found in affliction
like this.
Resolved, That we will attend the funeral of the deceased in a body.
Resolved. That the proceedings of this meting be published in the city
papers, and a copy of these resolutions be furnished the family of the
deceased.
On motion of Hon. Grove Lawrence, the resolutions were unanimously
adopted.
After the adoption of the resolutions, the Chairman very feelingly addressed the meeting respecting the many excellent qualities of the deceased, and the solemn admonition it offered to the members of the Bar to make preparations for the future.
On the conclusion of his remarks be invited other gentlemen to speak,
among whom were the following, vis: Hon. Charles Andrews, B. Davis Noxon,
Esq., Gen. Wm. J. Hough, F. M. King, Esq., and Geo. N. Kennedy.
The remarks of each and all these gentle, men were not only feeling
and impressive but revealed a conviction of responsibility to the final
Judge rarely elicited from a secular body. They all spoke of the deceased
in terms of the highest commendation.
We are unable to report the speeches, but are privileged to givet a sketch of that part of Major King's relating to the professional career of the deceased, and we give these only because they present a more connected history of his career as a lawyer than made by the other speakers.
He said: Judge Middleton was born in Plainfield, Connecticut, on the
31st of May, 1806, and would have been 58 years of age on the 31st day
of May next. About the time he attained his majority he entered the law
office of Judge Andrew Judson, at Canterbury, in that State, and was admitted
to practice at Brooklyn, in Windham county, in 1830, at the age of 24.
When he left Connecticut, he went to Newark, in Wayne county, in this state,
and commenced the practice of law there to 1835. On the recommendation
of the late Wm. L. Marcy, then Governor of this State, he was to practice
in our Supreme Court on the production of his certificate from Connecticut,
without any other examination. He was elected Judge of Wayne county in
1847, under the new constitution, then but recently adopted, which devolved
on him the onerous duties of both Judge and Surrogate, and he held the
office for the full term of four years. - When a successor came to be chosen,
he was earnestly solicited to take a re-nomination, but refused because
the labors were too severe for him. In fact I doubt if he has at any time
since 1851 enjoyed the health he had previous to undertaking the duties
of Judge and Surrogate in 1847. On retiring from the bench, he resumed
the duties of his profession and continued them until he came to this city
in 1856, where he formed a partnership with the late D. D. Hillis and our
Judge Morgan. With his career since then, we are all familiar. He arrived
at conclusions upon questions of law as if by intuition. He was a high-minded
and honorable man, a sociable and agreeable companion. His decease has
left a void in the profession of this city of which we shall all be sensible.
Tomorrow his remains will be gathered in the silent abode of the narrow
house. There to slumber until the trump of the Archangel shall call them
forth. His sudden death, in the vigor of his manhood, and in the recent
exercise of all his intellectual powers, admonishes us all that we too
must prepare to die. It is at all times solemn to stand at the door of
the tomb . It is for us, especially so when that tomb is opened to receive
the mortal remains of our brother. - Let us imitate our brother's virtues
and cherish his memory; let us fit ourselves to meet him at that Bar where
adjudication's no mortals can escape.

In the 1850 census of New London Co, CT, there was an eight year old male, Benjamin F. Middleton, living with the Gilberts. He was born in NY. He was probably a child of one of Harriets brothers.
There is a discrepency about Harriet and Horace's wedding date. The
LDS IGI states they were married on 2-17-1838 in Old Lyme. The film (002075)
of New London vital statistics shows them being married on 8-8-1833.The
1850
New London Census seems to backup the 1833 date because the ages of
the children show they were married long before 1838. Parents: Nathanial
