Formed in 1993, Divchata V Kukhni is a trio which is known for traditional female vocal folk music of Ukraine. Their name, "Divchata V Kukhni," simply means "Girls in the Kitchen," and comes from a Ukrainian wedding tradition in which the women who prepared the food would surround the newly married couple and sing ancient ritualistic weddings songs. Using wedding songs, vesnianki - spring songs, and folk pieces from various regions of Ukraine, the trio's music consists of acapella pieces with close harmonies as well as songs accompanied by various folk instruments: bandura (57 stringed Ukrainian folk instrument), tsymbaly (hammered dulcimer), sopilka (wooden flute) and percussion. | ||
