alloy- homogeneous mixture or solid solution of two or more metals

alluvial- pertaining to, contained in, or composed of, alluvium; relating to the deposits made by flowing water; washed away from one place and deposited in another; as, alluvial soil, mud, accumulations, deposits

atom- unit of matter, the smallest unit of an element, having all the characteristics of that element and consisting of a dense, central, positively charged nucleus surrounded by a system of electrons

atomic number- often represented by the symbol Z, the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom

chemistry- the science of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems

element- a substance composed of atoms having an identical number of protons in each nucleus; elements cannot be reduced to simpler substances by normal chemical means

gold- soft, yellow, corrosion-resistant element, the most malleable and ductile metal, occurring in veins and alluvial deposits and recovered by mining or by panning or sluicing

malleable- capable of being shaped or formed, as by hammering or pressure

metallurgy- science extracting metals from their ores

neutron- electrically neutral subatomic particle in the baryon family, having a mass 1,839 times that of the electron

ore- metal~bearing mineral mass that can be profitably mined

panning- process of filling a circular dish, usually with a pocket, with gold bearing sand or gravel

periodic table- chart that reflects the periodic recurrence of chemical and physical properties of the elements when the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number

proton- a stable particle with positive charge equal to the negative charge of an electron

quartz- very hard mineral composed of silica, SiO2, found worldwide in many different types of rocks, including sandstone and granite. Varieties of quartz include agate, chalcedony, chert, flint, opal, and rock crystal

science- the observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena

scientist- person having expert knowledge of one or more sciences, especially a natural or physical science

solvent- liquids that dissolve other substances (solutes), generally solids, without any change in chemical composition, as, water containing sugar

substance- that which has mass and occupies space; matter

transition elements- elements of group VIII and the b groups (I through VII) of the periodic table, characterized by the filling of an inner d or f electron orbital as atomic number increases
