Scientists believe that gold was discovered somewhere around 3 000
B.C. by an unknown person. The origin of golds name came from the old
English word geolo, which means yellow. But color-wise, its international
symbol, Au, is more proper, as it was derived from the Latin word aurum for
gold.
Locally, Canadian gold deposits have been discovered along the Yukon
River and its tributaries. In these regions, the substance was first discovered
in 1869. Later Bitter Creek, British Columbia, the Kirkland Lake region of
Ontario, and was found with copper, in Northwestern Qubec became gold
hot-spots after the gold-rush of the mid 19th century. Like Canadas north,
Australia owes the discovery of gold to many of its major cities and
communities. Australias south-east was the most accessible of all its states,
especially Victoria, as it was a giant in gold recovery since the 1850s
onwards, and even boosts a region named the Golden Triangle. Although
today, the Western Territory is the new gold giant of Australia, Victorias
Golden Triangle is still said to be the best gold mining spot in Oceania.
