- And then there was vinyl

-
- So that brings us up to
now. Like mose bassheads, Adam now wants more subs and a more attractive
setup. I have started doing the new box allready. I made an awesome capacitor
rack to house 10 (yes 10) sprague 100,000 micro farad capacitors. Read
more about this in the fiberglass cap rack section.
- As for the box itself,
Adam has chosen 6 JL audio 12W1-8's. These subs sound great and are
well priced. So a new design must be made. I made an enclosure and first
curved around all the little turns and crevises with fiberglass. Since
there was an aweful lot of these small curves, a lot of fiberglass would
be needed. I had a feeling that the structural integrity would be compromised
for space. Later, I chose to do as much curves and crevises out of 3/4" MDF.
This worked well, and better than I thought. The total space for the new
box including the space taken up by the cap rack and its covering is 9
ft3. WOW. That equals 1.5 ft3 per sub. As for the actual speaker placement,
3 12's will be against the back seat and 3 will be on top. Since I would
like the box to be able to be removed if needed, certain design steps had
to be made. Since I wanted the box to look like it was meant to be there,
colour matching vinyl will be added to peices of 1/8" hardboard that
will be held onto the box with silicon (trust me, this stuff holds things
together) once the box is in the truck. This design will give a great look
and there won't be any screws showing at all. As for the spots were the
subs sit, they are recessed into the box itself by being placed on a peice
of MDF under a main cutout on the main box itself. This is better illustrated
in the photos. The same colour vinyl as used on the cap rack is used on
the areas the subs are mounted on and a lighter vinyl is used elsewhere.
The grills are the cutouts from the main box, routered down curved and
covered with accoustically transparent grill material and another peice
of hardboard.
