FREDDY HARBACH

"The Flying Dutchman"

Johnny Rocco Giving Fred The Flag

For over forty years Long Islander's were treated to some spectacular wheelmanship and sportsmanship from Huntington resident Fred Harbach.

Whether behind the wheel of his many x88's 89's and 90's or driving for Butch Mecika in the 18, Fred could always be counted on to put on a good show. His main home track was Islip from around 1954 till it closed, but he also would show up at Trenton, Langhorne, Utica Rome, and Daytona etc.

When Dover was getting ready to open ,Fred was one of the first to set his wheels on it. His '36 Chevy coach toured the monster mile at 139 + mph.

Fred raced up till 1992 and went out a big winner taking the track championship at Riverhead and winning the last race. He passed away way to soon in June of 1995 at the age of 58. Look for his last modified the x90 to be appearing at local car shows around Long Island.
