AL DeANGELO
"THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO"
One of the most colorful characters to ever strap himself in a stock car,Al DeAngelo was also one of the best. He was in on it early on, from 1949 - 1970's.Fred Harbach said, "He was the best traffic man I ever saw" Among his many distinctions was the Islip Speedway Modified Stock Car Crown for the years 1949,50,51,52,53,59,60,61,63. Along with multi track championships at Freeport,Dexter Park. He was also in the top ten NASCAR modified drivers in 1957,and 59.In '59 he ran his famous '40 Ford Fuel Injected Thunderbird powered Ace Of Spades coupe on the new Daytona Speedway and had it get airborne as the wind got caught under its fenders at 140 mph. "Bad time to loose your steering"
Bolstered in many a race with his "liquid courage",Al was Long Island's answer to Curtis Turner. A truly talented, carefree, stock car ace. Today his freshly restored Ace Of Spades from the mid 50's is on display at the Himes Museum.
