Street Rodders United
21st Anniversary Rod Run

The 21st Orange Rod Run will be one to remember for the entrants and especially the organisers. Some of the highlights of the run were the informal darts competition and bench session held on Friday night in the front bar at the Hotel Canobolas, the cruise down the main street of Orange with 53 street rods and 3 street machines taking part and the poker run on Sunday (in fine weather) after pancake breakfast, which took entrants to Lake Canobolas.
The Anniversary Run wouldn't have been complete without the retelling of many stories of the first Orange Rod Runs and the honouring of those entrants who attended the 1st Orange Rod Run and were present at the 21st Orange Rod Run. Bob Bowman received a special award for attending both the 1st and 21st Runs in the same car (1928 Ford Coupe-Peppermint Pirate).
Well done Orange Street Rodders, and congratulations for your 21st Rod Run (a historic milestone for any organisation). Neil Whittingham/NSW (condensed stewards report)

The Challengers Hot Rod & Custom Car Club
25 Years in Rodding 1972-1997

The Challengers started in July 1972 with a membership of approx.10 people. Initially, meetings were rotated between members homes, then as membership grew, we moved to local hotels, using their meeting rooms. In 1985 we found a garage in Somerset, 10km west of Burnie, which we were able to rent for use as clubrooms, and still use today. With a few mods, including a kitchen, bar and BBQ area we made the garge into a comfortable place for meetings and functions. The walls are adorned with Hot Rod memorabillia, including yearly club photos and years of service certificates. In the late eighties, early nineties, membership numbers dropped to very low numbers and along the coast The Diamonds Rod Club of Devonport were experiencing the same problem. The Diamonds decided to fold and amalgamated with us. So, our membership now covers rodders from Burnie to Devonport (the north west coast of Tasmania i.e. Sunshine Coast). Like most rod clubs we are having trouble gaining younger members, due mainly to costs involved, and lack of available projects. Of our fourteen members we have twelve registered Rods which attend most Rod Runs. Our members take it in turns organising Runs, and attendance at these Runs is always good. We have visited many places along the coast, and it gives every member the opportunity to organise something they want to do. It is not left up to the committee.''
Our club has an Annual Dinner in July. We usually have 100% attendance to this. Also we have a Run on the March long weekend, and another one again in August. This year in August we planned to go to Strahan on the west coast, visiting Queenstown and Zeehan while there. We also produce our own bi-monthly Newsletter. This is provided to give information, meeting dates, work roster duties, President's report, advertise future functions, and of course a gossip page.
We may only be a small club, but we are an active club with good support from all members, with a majority having been with us for an average of 10-20 years. The smaller the club, the less hassles we feel, so we are happy with what we've got. However it would be nice to get some new, fresh blood into the club. We celebrated our 25 years in Rodding with a dinner with 50 Rodders and their partners. Buses were provided so everyone could have a good time. We all look forward to the next 25 years.

Adventure World / Western Australia

Club 48
c/- Tony Thomas

It is with great regret that I have to announce the demise of our club. "Club 48" was originally conceived in the late 70's early 80's by a small group of enthusiastic but low key rodders whose only goal was to enjoy building, driving and socialising with their rods.
Over the years our club has been represented in most runs and shows (including a contingent of four cars in the Hobart Show), and our members have participated in the NSW Street Rod Committee and show judging, but basically we have remained as a low profile, easy going club. Unfortunately, more recently, our club has reached new heights in low profile rodding, so much so that we are having difficulties in keeping our membership alive. Hot Rodding is still in our blood, just the veins are blocked. As soon as we can by-pass the house extensions, children and job commitments etc. we will be up and at it again, with the vigour and energy of a deck chair at Valla, just like the good old days.
Until then, we wish our fellow rodders and their clubs all the best, and look forward to seeing the sport continue to gain the strength and recognition it deserves, but also hoping it remembers its original beginnings of rodders enjoying rods and the mateship that formed from their common interest.
Yours in street rodding,
Tony Thomas/Club 48.
