Performance: the bottom line

All 1/4 mile runs listed were at Sears Pt. Racway:

severly traction limited 14.001sec @ 103.3 mph (NOS assisted)

14.89 sec @ 93.1 mph (above engine modifications, noNOS)

15.4 sec @ 89.99 mph (stock; only P-Flo, P-Chip, ThrottleBody)

A brief comment:

My poor drag race skills only managed to pull off a 14.0 sec quartermile. Part of this also had to due with the fact that the tires never hookedup until 5000rpm in third and the best 60ft times I could ever manage werearound the 2.2s. But the 103mph trap speed really shows off the hp thiscar had. I did have plans to install a NOS delay switch or progressivesystem, to solve this problem of too much power too soon, but nevergot around to it. I had hints that this might work since at LACR (picturesof Run1 <80K>, picturesof Run2 <64K>) I could only pull off a 14.3 sec.@ 98 mph. Thehigh altitude really sucked the power from the car, shown by the low trapspeed, but the times were not too far off.

For bang for the buck, you can't beat this NOS dry system. Some may thinkthat running NOS on a VW engine just doesn't work. Well they're right. The standard one fogger jet type system just doesn't work consistantly. My friend, on his 1.8L CIS-E motor, tried tthe fogger kit and experienced some monster backfires (the rubber boot on the air box blew off and dented the hood)But the "dry" system I ran, doesn't run fuel in the intake manifold,it only feeds Nitrous Oxide. Increased fueling is handled by pressurizingthe fuel regulator, which shuts down the return line fuel, thus bringingup the pressure to the fuel injectors. This engine could have easily beenjetted to a 100-120hp increase with no ill effects. The total cost for outfitting the Corrado with NOS was $500.

This was the third VW I owned. Previously, I had an 84 Rabbit GTI (mostly all body kit and suspension, no real enginemods), then when the 4-valver cars became available, I had to own an 87 16V Golf (no exterior or suspension mods but a 2045cc motor). Even though both of my two previous VeeDubs were highly modified, this Corrado wasby far the fastest of the three on any autocross course, road course, or drag strip.

Since I had a lot of fun with all three of my VeeDubs, I will probably may end up buying number four, another VR6 Corrado or maybe a VR6 Golf this time.
