| Fra Angelico was born c. 1400 in Vicchio, Tuscany, and died in 1455 in Roma. He was originally christened "Guido di Pietro" but when he became a friar in 1425, he took the name Giovanni da Fiesole. He began his career as an artist by illuminating books and manuscripts for the church. After that, he moved on to alterpieces, and in 1436 began frescos, first in the convent of San Marco, Florence, and later in the Chapel of Pope Nicolas and the Chapel the Sacrament in the Vatican (now destroyed), and the cathedral in Orvieto | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
