Technical Glitches Rain on KC Parade, Second Game Postponed to Jan.11
It took more determination away from the board than at it from both players, but in the end there was chess in the match between the UK's Murugan Thiruchelvam, age 11, and 12-year-old Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan.
It was a star-crossed affair from the beginning. Complications arose from all sides, first with the slow internet connection in Baku where Radjabov was playing, and then the connection was lost here in KasparovChess.com's offices in Israel! Our reporter on the scene, Tim Wall, was working with Teimour's family to get things working better in Baku while we had a half-dozen people here working on everything from problems with the Java applet to figuring out why our net connection disappeared for the first time in months just when we were hosting our first live event!
But I'd rather focus on the the game that was eventually played, although both sides had reason to protest the conditions. They carried on admirably and we thank them both and their families for sticking with us through the ordeal.
Radjabov's strong positional maneuvering on the black side of a French Defense finally carried the day in a protracted battle. He took over on the queenside early on and despite Thiruchelvam's heroic defense, Black forced a winning endgame.
Due to the late finish of the game, the rematch was postponed to Tuesday; we'll keep you updated here.
