Chapter 63, Guardian Angel |
When they arrived home, AJ decided to hang out with Breanna for a while. There was no sense in being at the hospital. Breanna was told by the hospital before she left that only one person could be with the mother during the delivery and Eve wasn't progressing very much. Breanna walked into her room and threw herself onto the bed. She felt sick again but tried not to let it bother her. She remembered the way Howie yelled at her and the painful look in his eyes. "I caused that." She mumbled as she cried herself to sleep. When she awoke a few hours later she walked slowly downstairs. She could hear muffled voices and assumed it was the TV. Breanna followed the voices until she reached the living room where AJ was sitting on the couch. "Hey, you're awake!" He commented with a smile. "Yet you still look like shit." He added. Breanna smiled and flipped him off as she plopped down on the couch next to him. "So, what's the plan?" He asked. "No plan. I'm just going to kick back here and wait for the phone call." Breanna replied as she took the remote from AJ. "You have lousy taste in television programs." She stated as she found Comedy Central. They ordered take-out, watched a South Park marathon, and talked about the past few days. AJ avoided the argument that she and Howie had shared in the early morning light but he knew she wanted to say something about it.
At two AM they finally fell asleep together on the couch with the TV running. Three hours later the phone rang. Breanna was quick to sit up and grab the cordless from off the coffee table. "Hello? Oh I can hear her! She's got some lungs, Train! Congratulations, Dad. Yeah, I'll tell him. Give the baby a kiss from her auntie and tell Eve I love her. Okay, bye Kevin. I love you, too." Breanna hung up the phone with a smile plastered to her face as she turned to wake a sleeping AJ. To her surprise he was watching her, completely awake. "So?" He coaxed. "6 pounds, 8 ounces. She was a few weeks early." Breanna replied. "Name?" "He didn't say. Eve wants to name her after she gets a good look at the baby. Kevin said that Eve really hadn't seen her yet cause they're cleaning the baby and sewing Eve up." AJ grimaced causing Breanna to laugh. "I gotta hand it to you women. If you had balls I'm sure you wouldn't cry out in pain if someone ripped 'em off." AJ stated. Breanna created a mental picture and slugged AJ in the arm. "That's sick!" She complained. He shrugged his shoulders and grinned in reply. "C'mon. Let's go to bed." He stated, standing up and taking her hand in his as he lead her upstairs.
The next morning Breanna and AJ walked into the hospital hand in hand. Once they arrived on the maternity ward Breanna ran off the elevator like a little schoolgirl straight towards the nursery. She didn't dare look at the name tags, opting to find the baby based on her features. In the front of the nursery, Breanna saw a calm and quiet baby girl with black hair and small green eyes. She was fighting to stay awake. "Isn't she beautiful?" Breanna commented to AJ who she thought was standing behind her. "She is." Howie replied as he watched the baby over Breanna's shoulder. Breanna stiffened but pretending not to be phased by Howie's presence. "What's her name?" She asked in an even tone, trying not to seem angry, shy, or friendly around him. "Well, Eve wanted to name her something exotic, but Kevin thought it sounded too Hollywood, so they decided on something simple. Sarah Katherine Richardson." Howie explained. "Sarah-Kate Richardson." Breanna cooed to herself as she watched the baby sleep. "Oh, Kevin's gonna have his hands full. She's gonna be a knockout!" AJ replied as he walked up to the nursery window after observing Breanna and Howie together. He wanted to give them some time alone but realized that it was fruitless.
A few hours later Breanna was feeding the baby as she sat next to Eve and Kevin, the rest of the guys standing around watching. Howie watched intensely with an empty feeling in his chest. Breanna couldn't believe the feelings she was having towards the baby. Feelings she didn't even know she was capable of having for someone else, or feelings that existed at all. After a while she handed the baby back to Eve and gave her a kiss on the head. "I'll call you from LA." She whispered into her ear. Eve looked into Breanna's sad face for a moment before nodding her head. "On't-Day Elle-Tay Em-they, k?" Breanna asked Eve in pig Latin, their favorite code language during high school. "I won't, Bree." Eve replied smiling sadly as the rest of the guys tried to understand them. Breanna looked around the room at her friends before walking out. "I'll be seeing you guys." She replied as she left. Howie knew something was going on. "Breanna, wait!" He stated as he followed her out into the hallway. "Round 2!" AJ joked as Eve and Kevin shot him a glare. "What?" He shrugged defensively.
"What do you want?" Breanna asked casually. "Bree, I'm sorry. For what I said the other day..." "Forget about it. I deserved it." She commented staring down at the ground as her long hair rolled over her shoulders near her face. "No, I'm not sorry for what I said, just how I said it. I shouldn't have yelled at you like that but I needed to tell you and I hope you understood. But you never told me what was going on with you." He said quietly as he brushed her hair out of her face. She looked up into his eyes and felt a knot build into her throat. "I'm...I...I just can't. I can't tell you." She choked out as tears sprang to her eyes. "What? Why? Breanna, you have to tell me!" He demanded, his voice raising. "I'm sorry!" She cried out as she ran towards the waiting elevator. Howie didn't bother to chase her, instead giving her some time alone. He wondered over to the nursery to watch the little baby he saw the day before but she was already gone.
Breanna drove home crying to herself. Once she walked into the door she made a beeline for the answering machine hoping by some miracle that her brother left her a message, something rare. "Bree, it's me. We're all leaving tonight and we were hoping to see you before we left. Give us a call at the hotel. If we're not there, we're at the hospital visiting Eve and the baby. Later!" Alexei said into the answering machine. Breanna grabbed the phone and dialed the hotel as quickly as she could. After talking to her brother for 20 minutes she called the airlines to see if there were any spots left open on the flight to LA. Luckily, there were two left in first class, one which Breanna quickly took. "Shit! I have 20 minutes to get my crap together or I'll miss the plane." She shouted as she ran around her room tossing things into the suitcase. "Bree?" She heard AJ shouting from downstairs. "Up here!" She shouted back as she zipped up her last suitcase. "Where are you going?" He asked quizzically. "Um, to LA with my family. I have some business I want to take care of." She explained. "Okay, well, I guess I'll take you to the airport." "Thanks, AJ." Breanna replied as she handed him her luggage.
After Breanna walked on to the plane, she was given a few knowing stares by the other passengers. Breanna acknowledged their presence with a friendly "hello" and a smile. "Fancy meeting you here." She heard a familiar voice a few minutes after she had sat down. "Mitchell?" She questioned slowly from under her favorite Nike baseball cap that Brian had given her. "You're in my seat." He joked with her as he pointed to the overhead compartment where the seating chart was engraved. "Oh, I always loved the window seat." She replied sheepishly as she got up to switch places with Mitchell. "No, sit. It's okay! I was kidding." He replied, sitting down on the isle seat. "Maybe I should take the isle seat. I don't want to get sick on you." She remarked. Mitchell looked at her with a concerned face. "What's been going on with you? You don't look the same." He questioned as the plane took off. Breanna closed her eyes tight and gripped Mitchell's hand. "And you've never had a fear of flying before." He added. "A lot's changed." Breanna replied quietly, loosening her grip on his hands. "Five hour flight. I think we're going to need this entire time to catch up." Mitchell said as Breanna nodded.
Once Breanna had explained everything to Mitchell, he didn't speak. He sat quietly comprehending what advice to give her. "Well, you took care of Eve. She's had the baby and the family is doing well. You're problem isn't your career. It's your history with men. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at the situation, it took a lot longer to catch up with you and Howie. You figured he was The One because this was the only relationship where you were totally comfortable. You didn't run, you didn't stray, but because you've had a traumatic history with guys, you're now at the point with Howie were you don't want any of that crap to happen again. You don't want to get hurt emotionally or physically, but you don't realize this. It's all happening subconsciously. The only way to solve this minor problem, and it is minor, Bree, would be to just take him back in your life. Let him show you that he's different. You need to put your guard down and let him love you. He's not going to hurt you, he'll never break your heart, pardon the pun." Mitchell joked with a smile to ease Breanna's obvious discomfort. "But, you have a bigger problem, and you have to tell him. And, judging by what you've said and what I can see, you don't have much time to tell him before he finds out on his own. If he does, you're in a lot more trouble, Hun. It's only after things with him are resolved will you realize what you want to do about your career." Mitchell explained. Breanna looked at him comprehending his words. "How do you know all of this?" She asked in shock. "It comes with the territory." He remarked with a large, comforting smile. "Oh, why couldn't you be straight?" She joked. "If I was, I wouldn't be this smart." He stated proudly. "Oh, there's that Hollywood Ego I missed so much!" She replied, messing up his hair. They joked, laughed and talked the rest of the way to LA. Mitchell always seemed to walk into Breanna's life when she needed advice most. She decided from that moment on, that he was her guardian angel.
