Chapter 62, Waiting

Howie drove everyone to the hospital as quickly as he could. "D, you can slow down. This baby won't be out for probably another 12 hours." Eve complained. Breanna sat in the front while Kevin held Eve's hand in the back seat. Eve stared out the window, savoring her last moment completely alone for the rest of her life. Soon enough she and Kevin would have a little person who would require round the clock care for as long as they lived. It was a scary thought in it's own but at the same time Eve loved the idea. It was her baby and Kevin's. She pictured their little girl to have Kevin's eyes and smile and her hair and delicate frame. "So, what are you going to name her?" Howie eventually asked as he drove at a more comfortable speed. "We're not sure yet. I love Breanna's middle name Tatiana but I think we'll decide once we see her. I want to see what name she looks like." Eve said smiling. Howie glanced at Breanna who was staring out the window as tears continued to slide down her cheeks. Howie looked back at Kevin in the rearview mirror as Kevin returned the glance with a you-blew-it expression. Howie sighed to himself, turning right into the hospital parking lot. Breanna was the first to hop out of the car, running towards the back of the car to grab Eve's suitcase. "Need help with that?" Howie casually asked. Breanna looked at him with tears in her eyes, shook her head no, and continued to walk past Howie to follow Kevin and Eve into the entrance of the hospital.

Once Eve was situated in one of the most comfortable delivery rooms in the hospital, Breanna went into the waiting room to make a few phone calls. It was almost 7:30 in the morning but to Breanna it felt like it was much later. She hadn't slept in over 24 hours and she was beginning to feel lightheaded. Breanna called Brian and Izabel first to let them know what was going on. She figured that Izabel was already awake because of Thomas. "Hello?" Izabel asked sleepily. "Iz, you're still asleep?" Breanna asked, feeling bad for waking her. "No, I've been lying here listening to Thomas playing in his room. I just don't feel like getting out of bed." "Oh, okay. I felt bad for waking you." Breanna stated quietly. "Oh, don't worry about it. Wait! What are you doing calling me this early? I thought you didn't get up before the sun went down?" Izabel joked. "I don't. I never went to bed. Howie stayed over and we talked but..." Breanna trailed off as her voice became shaky. "Oh Hun, you okay?" Izabel asked with concern, as she sat up in bed. She wanted to be fully awake if she was going to help Breanna. "Uh-huh." Breanna replied, more tears streaming down her face. "What happened, Bree?" Izabel coaxed. Breanna explained what happened and how Howie had yelled at her waking everyone up. Izabel didn't like the sound of things but she knew he had a right to be angry and hurt and Breanna knew it, too. "Anyway, the real reason I'm calling is to let you and Brian know that Eve's gone into labor. I'm at the hospital right now with Kevin and D." Izabel jumped out of bed and was about to shake Brian to wake him up. "No, Iz. Don't wake him up yet. She'll be in labor for a while." Breanna explained. "Just because it's a first baby doesn't mean she'll be in labor a long time, Bree. Thomas came within hours after my water broke. Has her water broke yet?" Izabel asked, tossing on a pair of jeans. "Yeah, a few minutes ago actually." "Well, that little baby wants out right now." Izabel said smiling as she remembered giving birth to Thomas. "But she's almost a month early. I don't even think Eve's 9 months along." Breanna said with shock. "Bree, it's safe to deliver at 8 months. She and the baby will be fine." Breanna felt like she didn't have a maternal bone in her body all of a sudden. Her two best friends were wives and mothers and her other best friend was in a serious relationship. Breanna laughed to herself slightly, feeling like she was back in high school wondering why all her friends had boyfriends and she didn't. "You okay, Bree?" Izabel asked as Breanna laughed. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just remembering how much me and Eve couldn't stand children a few years ago, and here I am waiting for her to have one, wondering when it will be my turn." Izabel giggled as she sat back down the bed, watching Brian sleep peacefully. "I'm considering waking up sleeping beauty over here. You know, he had an imprint on his face from the wastebasket when we got home." Breanna laughed at the thought. "Well, I still have to wake up AJ and Nick so come down to the hospital when you get a chance. I'm sure you're familiar with the delivery floor and waiting room." Breanna stated. "The delivery floor and room, yes, the waiting room, no." Izabel explained with a laugh. "Well, get to the delivery floor and look for signs. I gotta go. Bye, Iz!" Breanna said, hanging up her cellphone.

Howie walked around the hospital thinking about what he had done. He felt better for telling Breanna what was going on in his head but he never got a chance to hear what Breanna had to say. He knew she was hurt because she couldn't stop crying but she never explained anything. He walked up to the nursery window and watched all the newborns fussing and sleeping. They looked so peaceful and healthy. Nothing could hurt them. They had no idea about what awaited them when they grew up. All the pain, hurt, confusion, and love. He noticed one little baby girl who stood out the most. She cried the loudest and moved around like a little worm. She had a little white cap on her head with a pink ribbon running through the front of it. Her light brown straight hair peeked out from under the cap. She had perfect almond shaped brown eyes and pale skin. When the other babies started to cry, she would cry louder. When the other babies would move around, she would kick her legs harder. She definitely had a strong personality. Howie watched her for an hour and wondered who she reminded him of before it hit him that she was the infant version of Breanna. He sighed and turned around, walking back towards the waiting room.

When he walked into the waiting room, he noticed that Breanna was asleep on the couch. He sat down in a parallel couch as he watched her sleep. The vision of that little baby girl came flooding back to him again. He smiled to himself and grabbed the remote to watch TV while he waited for news on Eve. After half an hour he saw movement in the corner of his eyes. He glanced over to see Breanna moving around uncomfortably on the couch as she continued to sleep. He tried to ignore her but before he turned his attention back to the TV she started to scream his name, the same way he heard her scream from the phone in Las Vegas. He jumped up quickly and started to shake her until she sat up crying hysterically. Through the haze of tears she saw Howie sitting in front of her trying to calm her. She threw herself into his arms, clinging to him. He tried to comfort her, telling her that everything would be alright as she continued to cry. Five minutes passed before Breanna pulled away and looked into his scared eyes. She saw fear in them and realized that he was frightened for her. She pushed him off her and stood up to leave the room. "Breanna, wait!" He stated. Breanna stopped in her tracks and turned to face him, rubbing the tears from her eyes. "What?" She asked in a hoarse voice. "What is going on? You have to tell me." Breanna looked into his eyes trying to find any emotion. For the first time in almost a year she saw something in them that she missed and wanted more than anything. She saw love in his eyes but knew that she couldn't do anything about it. "I can't tell you what's going on. I just can't!" She said, turning around to run out the door. She ran right into Brian and Izabel. "Hey, what's wrong?" He asked, leaning down to look into her eyes. Breanna glanced over at Izabel with a knowing look. "It's okay Brian, let me talk to her." Izabel replied, taking Breanna's hand to walk down the hall.

Brian walked into the waiting room to see Howie sitting on the couch with his head in his hands. "What happened this time?" Brian asked as he plopped down on the couch that Breanna had vacated. "Nothing." Howie mumbled, not in the mood to talk about it. "Something's going on! She didn't look like she was happy." Brian replied sarcastically. Howie looked up at Brian as he sat with his sunglasses on. "He has a hangover. Great!" Howie thought, remembering that Brian wasn't the easiest person to be around when he had a hangover. "She had another nightmare, that's all." Howie explained. Brian took that as a good enough excuse and laid on the couch. A few minutes passed before he was finally asleep.

Breanna and Izabel talked for a few minutes about nothing before Breanna told her what happened. Izabel was the only one, besides Alexei, who knew the entire truth about Breanna including the nightmares. "So you had a nightmare and he was your knight in shining armor who saved you from it." Izabel explained. "It's not that. It's just after everything he said to me, all the anger, confusion, and hurt I've caused him, he's still there to love me. Why?" Breanna questioned. They stopped in front of the nursery to watch the babies. "Because he loves you, Bree. Love is blind. It comes in many different forms. He just happens to have undying love for you. No matter what happens, what you do, or who you end up with he's still going to love you. That's just how he is and that's just how love works." Izabel explained as they watched a little, feisty baby. Breanna looked at her and cringed at the thought of how hard it was going to be to raise that child. "She's just like me, only a baby." Breanna joked pointing to the infant. "She acts like you and she looks like you. She's even as loud as you!" Izabel replied smiling at the little baby. Breanna continued to watch the baby girl with Izabel. They stood at the window in silence before Izabel finally spoke up. "You're still keeping your doctors appointment today, right?" "I don't think so. Maybe I should cancel it and see my doctor next week." Breanna replied. "No, see the doctor. Make sure everything's going well. So, what do you plan to do about Howie?" "I don't know yet. I want to finish up my business in LA first. When I get back, I guess I'll see what happens." Izabel looked at Breanna as she watched the babies intensely with the look of fear on her face. "You okay? You look scared." Izabel noticed. "I am." Breanna replied, turning around to walk out of the hospital.  "Tell everyone that I'll be at Kevin and Eve's." Breanna said over her shoulder towards Izabel.

When Breanna walked out of the hospital, she realized that she didn't have a car. It was at Kevin and Eve's. She sighed to herself as she placed her sunglasses over her tired eyes. She glanced around the parking lot and noticed a familiar looking face hidden under a velvet hat and yellow shades. Breanna smiled as he walked closer towards her. He wrapped his arms around her and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. "How ya doing, Bree? Kevin mentioned something about a fight last night." Breanna looked up at AJ as he watched her with sympathetic eyes. He was always one to cut to the point. "Talk to Howie. I don't have anything to say..." She trailed off, glancing past AJ as he stood in front of her. "Why not?" "...because he's right." She finished. "So where you are headed all alone?" He asked. AJ knew Breanna didn't want to talk about it and tried to change the subject. "I was about to go to Eve and Kevin's to catch up on a few hours rest but my car's at their house." "C'mon, I'll take you home." AJ replied, taking her hand in his.
