Java Morph with Slider & Extrapolation

I found this program � � http://javaboutique.internet.com/Morph/

and added a slider/scrollbar.

One thing I don't understand is ...

why does the picture get weird suddenly (i.e. the colors get strange suddenly rather than gradually) the very moment it is outside the usual morphing (interpolation) range and starts extrapolating?
(This is most noticeable with the snake picture.)
