 NCJCL State Convention

Location: UNC-Chapel Hill
Dates: April 26th-27th 2002
Registration Deadline: March 12th 2002

If there's one competition you have to go, it's the NC JCL state convention! This convention lasts two days and has the most activities, including certamen, academic tests, a talent show and olympika.

On the first day, usually a Friday, you can register and can watch or participate in the talent show, entitled "That's Entertainment." Then, on Saturday, things get exciting. First, you will be able to take up to five academic tests on subjects such as grammar and mythology. Each test is about fifty questions and is multiple choice and the tests are graded by level. Then, it's time for Olympika! Olympika at the state convention is very similar to the Fall Forum's Olympika, except it has more events. Here you can not only compete in track and field but also swimming. If your team was able to place in the top nine for your level, you can compete in certamen at the state convention, which is structured exactly like every other certamen competition. However, if you didn't get to the top nine, you can still play in open certamen, which unlike other competition doesn't let your play in a team with your school, teams here are randomly chosen. But, wait, there are still many more contests at the state convention! If you're an artist, there's an arts and crafts contest which contests in such media as models, mosaics, flags, and paintings. There's also a skit contest for all you aspiring actors, playwrights, and screenwriters out there. If costumes are your thing, you can participate in the costume contest, which usually asks you to dress up as a mythological character or a famous couple. There are even more activities at the state convention, but you have to go there to find out what they are.

The registration fee for the state convention is less than five dollars a person. Since it's so close, we, unlike other schools, will not have to make hotel reservations, unless we want to... Last year, they did not provide lunch for us, so you will either have to bring your own or buy some from the university. The university's dining hall is comparable to UNC-G's and you can also buy sandwiches and other snacks from the UNC student store. The student store also has a gift shop and bookstore, making it a great place to spend time between activities. You can also wander around the campus or go to the student union if you want to. The student union features a small fast food place (which was closed last year), a lounge where you can watch tv, vending machines, computers with internet access, plenty of places to sit, a small cultural center, an arcade and some bowling lanes. This year, we need at least 30 members to come to the NC JCL state convention and we urge everyone to come. It is by far the most important convention we go to. If we can get enough members to come, we will provide transportation.
