Consultative services for patients with a wide variety of immunologically-mediated diseases are seen in the Immunology Center. These include patients with allergic diseases of the skin (e.g., eczema), respiratory tract (e.g., allergic rhinitis, asthma, sinusitis) and the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., food allergy). In addition evaluation of patients with drug allergy, stinging insect allergy is provided together with treatment of these disorders including immunotherapy.
Adult patients and children with immunodeficiency disorders are also evaluated. These disorders include diseases of phagocytic cells, complement, B and T cells. Also, patients with both organ specific and generalized autoimmune disorders are evaluated and recommendations are made for a variety of treatment options including both traditional steroid and immunosuppressive drugs as well as new anti-cytokine therapies.
A major area of both clinical and research interest is the use of new and developing vaccines such as new aerosolized forms of measles vaccines which can be administered through aerosolization in the respiratory tract.
