The Way...
Most people seem to wonder why we even need a way back to God.  The reasoning is something like, "If God loves me so much then why can't He just be my friend and all will be well?"
God does love us and wants us to return to Him, but the biggest problem we face is ourselves.  WE want to be in control and we confuse unconditional LOVE with unconditional ACCEPTANCE.
I love my daughter, no matter what, but there are things that I can not accept in her behaviour.  Anyone with children knows that you can love your child and still yell at them if they are playing in the street.  In fact BECAUSE you love them you discipline them when they are doing something that puts them or someone else in danger.
I think all of us would agree that we would rush to take a loaded gun away from our own child.  But what if your child had the gun pointed at you, and didn't know what they held in their hand?  That's the way it is with God, and if you want to be able to hear Him calling you, you have to first realize that you have the gun pointed at him and you at the same time.
It's easy for us to forget that God is HOLY.  That doesn't mean He's a very MORAL guy who does no wrong, it means that He is INCAPABLE of doing wrong,  In fact He is so incapable of wrongdoing, that He can't even be in the PRESENSE of wrongdoing.  When you were a teenager, did your parents ever tell you that you were judged by the friends you hung around with?
You see, like the picture at the right, we want to run around and play with God like He is man's best friend.  The truth is we aren't God's best friend.  Everyday, NO MATTER HOW GOOD WE TRY TO BE, we are just out of God's league and do things that destroy people and the world around us.  In short we destroy His creation.  Imagine you're putting the finishing touches on a marvelous sandcastle.  A little child comes running by and innocently trips over it and it crumbles to the ground.  Would you hate the child?  Probably not.  Would you want to protect your next sandcastle from the child?  Probably so. We are the sandcastles in God's life, and we are the little children running carelessly around the other sandcastles.
You see, at the same time, we are God's most beloved treasure, and His most despised enemy.  He created each us at the beginning of time and then patiently waited for each of us to be born.  You weren't an afterthought, and your parents didn't decide to have you.  God decided at the beginning that you would be here and He literally moved Heaven and earth so that your parents would meet at precisely the right moment and you would be born.
God also knew in the moment when He created you, that you would be one of the ones running around kicking over His other sandcastles.  Can you imagine a loving parent having to decide which of their children should die so that another child could live?  God doesn't have to imagine it... He's lived it
