My Obsessions...

From Around the World

Gerard Butler, Russell Crowe, Jude Law, Paul McCartney, Ewan McGregor, David O'Hara and Stuart Townsend

Gerard Butler:

Scotland

I first came across Gerry Butler in 2005 when I saw "The Phantom of the Opera". Considering he had been in several other films, it was surprising that I had somehow managed to miss him. I checked his filmography and though I had heard of many of his films, I just hadn't seen a single one, unfortunately. I am currently making up for lost time.

Now, not only is this man gorgeous AND have a Scottish accent, but he can act too! He's also completely charming, very modest, and extremely funny. Be sure to check out his appearances on several of the talk shows. I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of him in the future.

Russell Crowe:

Australia

I consider myself very lucky to have come across Russell Crowe in his role as Bud White in the amazing film "L.A. Confidential". He earned my full attention with his portrayal of Bud because he was such a complex man, with several sides to him. Russell played each one of them with amazing skill. He did so well, he made me feel each of his emotions. By the end of the film, I was rooting for Bud rather loudly, much to the embarrassment of my friend who was sitting next to me. Luckily we weren't in the movie theater at the time. Since I was so captivated by him in this film, I knew I had to go on one of my obsession sprees and rent ALL of his films.
...And, finally he's getting recognized because of his amazing performance in Gladiator. Personally, I thought he was more amazing in L.A. Confidential, but that's just my opinion. All of his movies are worth seeing, however.

Jude Law:

England

I first discovered Jude Law when I rented the film "Gattaca", which also stars Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. Though I enjoyed watching Ethan, I found Jude much more captivating. He did a wonderful job in the film, plus I thought he was rather cute and the English accent did me in. I had heard of Jude before I ever saw the film. In fact, initially, he was part of the reason why I had wanted to see it. After finding a lot of information about Ewan McGregor, I discovered that he has a production company with his friends, one of whom is Mr. Jude Law. After looking for information about Jude, I found that there was very little and unfortunately his movie career was just getting going, which meant I wouldn't be able to see him in much of anything. I read he had a part in the film "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" opposite Kevin Spacey and John Cusack. The day the movie came out, I had the vhs cassette in my grasp. I was disappointed to discover that his part was rather small. Another one of his films is called "Shopping" in which he stars with his wife, Sadie Frost. Well, let me just say that it is a good thing I like Jude, otherwise I would have been crying over the lost hour and a half of my life. I just recently saw "I Love You, I Love You Not", a film where he plays the love interest of Claire Danes. It was enjoyable because of him, but otherwise I could have done without seeing it."Wilde" is another film in which he stars, where he is just amazing. It's hard to take your eyes off him (especially during that nude scene :). I had the same problem during The Talented Mr. Ripley...WOW! What talent! He fully deserved that Oscar nomination and though he should have won, I somehow don't believe it will be the last of his nominations. Coming up next? The Wisdom of Crocodiles. Can't wait for that one.

Sir Paul McCartney:

England

Paul McCartney has meant a lot to me for qutie some time now. I feel like I have come to know him through his films, The Beatles Anthology, articles I have read, and especially his music. One of the reasons he means a lot to me is because whenever I am in a bad mood or just feeling low, I can always count on Paul's beautiful music and wonderous voice to cheer me up.

David O'Hara:

Scotland

What is it that I like about David O'Hara? Well, yeah, he's kind of cute, but I have certain standards for becoming interested in an actor. Above anything else, even appearance, the most important factor is acting ability. With David O'Hara, as well as with all my other obsessions, his charisma automatically comes across the movie screen and intrigues me. In every movie I've seen him in, I find myself unable to take my eyes off him when he appears on screen. And one thing I'm very impressed by is his versatility. After seeing him in one role, I delude myself into thinking that I know a little bit of what the man is like in real life, that is, until I see him in another role, which completely throws me off my original opinion. For instance, the first role I saw him in was The Matchmaker. He was so charmingly funny in that role, but as is my usual pattern, I didn't really start liking him until I had seen the movie for the second or third time. Now I own it. Next, I saw him in Braveheart, and his witty charm shone through his scraggily appearence as the crazy Irishman. By the way, in both films he plays an Irishman, but he's actually Scottish. He played another Irishman in Some Mother's Son and his character here threw me off. It was a very serious role and he pulled it off beautifully. It was hard to reconcile the witty David O'Hara from the previous two films with the David O'Hara in this film. It's the mark of a good actor when it's difficult to see the real him through his role. I've also seen him in his very small role as a radio station engineer in Comfort and Joy and his more significant role as a dectective in Prime Suspect 5. Also, he plays the evil Bill Sykes in Oliver Twist, the made for t.v. Disney movie which also stars Elijah Wood and Richard Dreyfus.

Stuart Townsend:

Ireland

I first came across Stuart Townsend in the movie "Shooting Fish," which also stars Dan Futterman and Kate Bekinsale. Stuart plays Jez, a con man who is utterly charming in his shyness. Dan plays Dylan, his partner in crime, a supposed ace with the ladies. But Kate's character Georgie doesn't fall for Dylan, and neither did I. Check soon on my movie page for a review of this movie. Unfortunately, there is little information out there about Stuart and so far I've only seen three of his movies: "Shooting Fish," "Trojan Eddie," and "Ressurrection Man."
