Movies...Movies...Movies...Movies...Movies

Here are some of my favorites!

Trainspotting happens to be one of my favorite movies. Why? Um, if you can't guess, click here for a hint. Ewan is not the only reason, I assure you. It is just a plain old good flick. Well, not really plain. There aren't too many movies about a group of Scottish friends whose favorite pasttime is shooting up heroine. Maybe that is the reason why I like it. It is so original. Danny Boyle, the director, and the entire cast did a wonderful job. Don't miss it.

Four Weddings and a Funeral is another one of my favorite movies. I think I have something for British films. This has to be one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Especially the bedroom scene after Bernard and Lydia get married. Poor Charles. And what better way to start off a movie than with the word "F#@!". Just about everyone can relate to oversleeping and then swearing your head off because you did. Though it can be a little cheesy now and again, it is truly a refreshing romantic comedy and I highly recommend it.

I just saw It's A Wonderful Life a short time ago. I am immensly glad that I got around to it. Jimmy Stewart is amazing as George Bailey and he most definitely should have won an oscar for it. It is a wonderfully heartwarming story, one that I knew I had to add to my movie collection. I'd have to say my favorite scenes are: at the dance when George and Mary fall into the pool, the walk home from the dance when Mary loses her robe, the telephone conversation to Sam, when George hops over the counter in the Building and Loan office, saying "Merry Christmas" to everyone and everything at the end, anytime he says "how's that?" , and any of his facial expressions. What a great guy!

I truly enjoyed Sense and Sensibility. I like to see what things were like back in the 1800s. I saw this about a year before Titanic came out and I was amazed by Kate Winslet's performance. I was immensly happy that she was nominated for her role as Marianne. Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay and I believe she won for best adapted screenplay. I must admit that when I first saw the movie, I enjoyed it, but I didn't think that I would see it again. I ended up having an urge to see it over and over again, so I just ended up buying it. My favorite scenes are: When Edward walks into the library with his sister Fanny only to see an atlas scurrying beneath a table. It happens to be dragged under the table by Margaret Dashwood, the youngest of the sisters who is in hiding from the unwanted visitors. Edward tries to cover up her exhasperated squeal, when Fanny mentioned something not to her liking, with a little squeal of his own. Also, when Margaret and Edward practice sword fighting. When Edward comes upon Eleanor listening to Marianne play their father's favorite song on the piano. When Edward stops by to visit when Eleanor is in London and the uncomfortable silence that they have to endure because of Lucy Steel, Edward's intended whom he doesn't want. The ending when Eleanor finally realizes that Edward truly loves her. Also, just about any scene with Marianne.

I saw Emma when it first came out in the theaters. I enjoyed it the first time, but I didn't think it was spectacular. I have since changed my opinion. I ended up renting it when it came out on video and I caught so many things that I missed the first time around. First of all: Ewan McGregor. I know, I know. How could I have missed him the first time around? I hadn't seen Trainspotting yet and that wig just didn't do anything for him. Besides him, I realized that the movie was very funny. Check out the myriad of facial expressions Gwenyth pulls off. They are very effective. Her accent is great too. If you didn't know she was American, one would hardly be able to tell that she wasn't English. She WAS Emma. The casting was perfect! Mr. Knightly wasn't so bad either. The chemistry between them was very believable. My favorite scenes? Just about every one. Even without the humorous dialogue, the movie would still be entertaining. I just loved the scenery and the various colors of the clothing they wore. If you are going to see this movie, see it a couple of times, just to make sure you catch everything. It's worth it.

Oh yes, Ewan's latest flick: A Life Less Ordinary. I thought Ewan did an amazing job in this role. He was at the funniest I have ever seen him. Oh, he was so wimpy and so good at it, but then again he was really good at being a heroine addict, a mine worker/horn player, a human canvas, a 19th century Englishman, a reporter dealing with his obsessed roommates as well as his own obsession with money. What can I say? He is good at everything he does. What versatility! Cameron Diaz did okay, but Ewan stole the show in my opinion. What I can't believe is that the critics hated it! They are too picky. Why can't they just sit back and enjoy a movie rather than analyze every single aspect of it? Okay, my favorite scenes? This might take a while...When Robert, so proud of his idea for a novel, tells his buddies and gets shot down (poor guy). When he attempts to throw the robot through the window (what a statement that would make!), but it just bounces off and keeps on cleaning, doing his former job. When the cops jump on him all at once. When Cameron's character starts harrassing him about thinking about having sex with her and then accusing him of being afraid of it. The telephone booth, poor guy, just not the kidnapping type. When he cooks dinner. When he gets shot. When he starts whimpering that he had to dig his grave. When Delroy's character falls on him and he starts screaming his head off. The kareoke scene. Alright, that is enough, wouldn't want to give it all away. GO SEE IT!

Back in early '95, when I decided to become obsessed with The Beatles, I started my collection of everything Beatles. First I started with the cd's and then with the movies. When I first saw A Hard Day's Night, I thought it was pretty good, but I thought that the humor was kind of old. I have since changed my mind. At the time when I saw it, I didn't quite know each of The Beatles. Now I do and it is most definitely one of the funniest and well done movies I've seen. My favorite scenes are: On the train when they start harassing the man who joins them in their car. "Mister, can we have our ball back?" as they are running outside of the train. When Paul approaches the ladies in the car with the hat on his head "I'd ask you myself only I'm shy". When John talks to the man right before the press conference as they are going up the stairs. He was mentioning that he couldn't blow his nose on his hankerchief since it was used as decoration in his front pocket. When John and Paul try to get a drink, but they are pulled away by inquiring people. "No actually, we're just good friends." If I Fell. Most definitely, John's bathtub scene! "Zap!" and "Shazaam!" And so many more, I can't think of them all.

One Fine Day

Once again, it seems that if I don't see a movie a second time, I miss out on truly enjoying a movie. The second time around I catch so many things that I love about a movie. I truly enjoyed One Fine Day when I saw it in the theater, but now that I own it, I love it all the more. Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney had such great chemistry together. It's an entertaining story that deals with the dynamics of real life: Single mother and single father are left to deal with their kids on a busy working day when the children miss their field trip. What results? Complete chaos, and I loved every minute of it. My favorite scenes: Just about everything, but especially the puddle scene, also when Jack turns around to lift Melanie over the blockade, but she already found her way around. I could feel his disappointment. The whole apartment scene at the end. The session Jack has with his shrink. When Jack asks where he can get a bag like Melanie's. Just watch the movie, it's good.

Unlike some other movies I have seen, I liked Help! right away. I laughed so hard the first time I saw it and I continue to do so each time I see it. The Beatles are at their funniest and cutest. I have so many favorite parts, but some of them are: When Paul shrinks and wraps the gum wrapper around him and takes a bath in the orange juice. "Ew, I'm all sticky!" he says. The skiing scene. All of their songs. John's bed. And so many more. I can't think of them all.

Music From Another Room

This movie wasn't a big hit at the box office, in fact it was quite difficult to find anywhere. Now it's on video and should definitely be checked out. Why did I see this movie??? See that guy in the middle? Recognize him? Click here if you can't guess............Yup, it's Jude Law. Pretty cute, eh? There's more to it than that, though. Okay, so it's a little cheesy at times. In fact it can be unbearably so, but Jude is just so hard to resist. He does a great job. He can pull off action, drama, comedy...everything. Gretchen Moll can be a little annoying, but besides that, it's a cute film. It's about a little boy who helps in the birthing of a baby girl and declares in front of everyone there: "I'm going to marry her." Okay, so you basically know how the story ends, but there are several funny things that happen along the way. The little boy, Danny, grows up over in England, and returns to America looking for work after his dad died. Well, wouldn't you konw it, he comes across the girl he once helped to deliver, and her family. Oh no, one problem, the girl Anna, is engaged. Don't worry, Jude will overcome all odds. Anna's family is pretty much insane, so it's interesting to learn all about them even if you do figure out the ending. Hope you enjoy it.
