Ferrell became interested in performing while a student at University High School in Irvine where he made his school's daily morning announcements over the public address system in disguised voices.

Ferrell is in his fifth season on Saturday Night Live

Prior to joining SNL Ferrell was a member of the Los Angeles based comedy/improv group The Groundlings. Other SNL cast members like Chris Kattan, Ana Gasteyer, Cheri Oteri and former players such as Laraine Newman, Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman all started there.

Ferrell has also appeared on several television programs such as: Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Late Show with David Letterman, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Grace Under Fire, and Living Single.

Ferrel together with Chris Kattan brought their swinging Butabi brothers to the big screen in "A Night At The Roxbury". They also co-wrote the movie with Steve Koren. In 1997 he made his feature debut as "Mustaffa" in the hit comedy "Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery" and he returned in 1999 in the sequel "Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me". He also appeared as Watergate reported Bob Woodward in the Nixon-era comedy "Dick" starring Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams and opposite castmate Molly Shannon in a funny comedy "Superstar" where she brought her character Mary Katherine Gallagher to the screen.
