Planning and Organizing

(By Angela, PAVE Founder)

Get the Word Out: Try to get e-mail lists from woman's studies classes, campus safety committees, etc. and start an e-mail list. Add these names and e-addresses to your address book and form a master list including names of friends and family. Send out a mass e-mail briefly describing your organization, its goals, and intent. You might also attach our mission statement. Plan an organizing meeting time 3-4 weeks before your first official meeting. In your e-mail, let them know about the first official meeting time, location, and date. After you describe your goals, let them know that you will be having a planning/organizational meeting for students who want to help you develop this group. It's important to have most of your projects and goals figured out ahead of time, it's easier to motivate people to help you if you have developed a plan (even if it is a draft thus far). Also in the e-mail, ask people who aren't interested in receiving any more e-mails from your org to e-mail you their address. Then be sure to take them off right away.

Find Other Leaders: It's key to motivate other young people to help you in your endeavors. I wanted 2 people to head each different facet of PAVE on my campus. This is important because you can't do everything by yourself. Find a friend who will be your secretary who will take notes during every meeting. At my first planning meeting, I gave everyone a printed list of facets of PAVE that I needed students to head. Go to this list

Additional Planning Meetings: Each week prior to your first official meeting, set up a time to organize with your other members to pass out flyers and help get the word out. It's also a good idea to contact other organizations around your community during their meeting times to pass the information on about your first official meeting time. You can split this up with your Public Relations chair. Some ideas include: Planned Parenthood, Multi-Cultural Center, Fraternity and Sorority Presidents meetings, church groups, and area high schools. Before each meeting, send out a mass e-mail stating the date, time, and location of the meeting place.
