P.A.V.E.

Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment

Help pave the way for victims of sexual and gender violence!

This was given to members of PAVE at our first organizational meeting about 3 weeks before the first official meeting.

By Angela, PAVE Founder

Student Leaders: I would like to have one or two students to lead each of these projects this semester. The time commitment won't be overwhelming because you each will have me overseeing each project, and other students to work for you. The lines of communication must be open, that's essential. All I ask is that if ever you won't be able to fulfill any commitment, let me know ASAP. That goes for even the smallest project.

Time Commitment: We would meet once a week or every two weeks, but send a report out over e-mail every week and cc it to all of the heads. I can't stress enough how important it will be to be in constant communication. I prefer e-mail because I'm never at home.

Spring Semester 2001

1. Campus Safety Campaign

  1. Poster Project: We will be working on putting up posters on sexual assault awareness in the men's and women's bathrooms of bars and restaurants in the downtown area.
  2. Fact: There is a strong correlation between alcohol and sexual violence. Over 80% of sexual assaults are committed by an acquaintance, and the majority of those involve alcohol. We'll be reaching out to young people in high-risk situations.

  3. Line of Sight: We want more of the Emergency Blue Light phones on campus, especially in high-risk areas such as the Lakeshore Path. Right now, there are only around 20 on campus.

C. SafePark: The faculty parking lots that are open to the public at 10:00 pm should be changed to 5:30 pm. This would allow commuting students a safer alternative to parking in a far ramp and walking alone.

2. Supporting Legislation

Example: Useful tactics: petition and letter drives, lobbying

3. Media Coordinator

In charge of coordinating letters to the editor, special event publications, and press releases. Also, the PR and Media will work together to coordinate posting flyers and chalking.

4. Public Relations Coordinator

This involves getting more organizations involved in PAVE and our projects. Example: presenting our projects to Sorority President Meetings, Diversity Club meetings, etc.

5. Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is SAAM and the week is April 23-27. Take Back the Night is April 27 (there were hardly any students at the last TBTN, let's change that!) There are a lot of great ideas that have yet to be approved, like the Silent Witness project. I plan to do this month up BIG, let's try to get a lot of students involved, the more males the better!! Any other ideas?

6. Monthly Mail Out

We need a good writer and researcher to head this. Help me find current events to publish. The head of this committee will also coordinate people to stuff, address, and stamp mail out.

7. Theatre

Acting and plays are great ways to get your message across. We could either perform these plays for the area high schools or hold events in the Playcircle. Talk to the Theatre Department and ask the Professor to have students write a script.

8. I Have the Courage, We Have the Power

Journalism students made up this slogan. We want to put this on Metro buses and around town.

National Publicity: This is an opportunity to impact a large amount of young people. Other schools in the mid-west and in the nation! We need to work hard this semester so other schools and organizations will follow.
