| Tollef Pedersen Braatelien I was born at Braatelien, December 24, 1833. When I was ten years old, I trained as a shoemaker and tramped around in the neighborhood with the last, clamps, and stretching tools on my back. For four years I worked only off and on, and the wages were so bad that it took 13-14 hours a day to earn 12 skillings. So in the fall I started working in the woods where I earned more. Two ort a day; I thought that I would get rich. But the riches went to my feet. I can remember that I fell full length, as if I tripped on something, when I was going home. Father bought a farm on Lyngdalskogen in Numedal. I got the use of the Braatelien place. I became a farmer and householder. After father had been in Numedal for two years, he sold the farm again, and came back to Braatelien. We bought Kvislebratan. I was married to Hanna Olava Wagre September 16, 1863, in Norderhov Church in Ringerike. We lived in Kvislebratan a few years. We moved to Drammen. After renting a house for a time, we bought a house on Aasiden in Lier and lived there until father's death. We then bought Braatelien at auction in the estate settlement and were there a couple of years. We began to think about the promised land where pigs ran around cooked, with knives and forks stuck in them, so that one had only to eat. That was a mistake. All of the pigs had already been eaten. We came to Rothsay, Minnesota the spring of 1885. There was no longer free land to get, therefore, we bought a quarter section of improved land. We bought more land later from a railroad company. We have lived there ever since. We have had 13 children. Two of them died as infants in Norway and two died in this country, one here and another in Tacoma, Washington. Last fall we had our fifieth wedding anniversary. Tollef was 80 years old on Christmas Eve of 1913, and is in good health. They live on their farm in Akron Township in Wilkin County, four miles southwest of Rothsay. They have a good, pretty home and are prosperous. Sigdalslag 1914. Tollef Pederson Braatelien Tollef Pederson Braatelien lay down his wandering staff on November 20, 1918. He closed his eyes for the last time quietly and peacefully. The cause of his death was the weakness of old age. He was born December 24, 1833 in Sigdal. At his death he was probably the Sigdalslag's oldest member. Loved by his family, he was always temperate and honest. In his everyday dealings he was greatly respected by all who knew him. His beiography is in the lag's first book. He was put to rest at the Hamar Cemetery at Rothsay, MN. Sigdalslag 1920. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
