Mr. T. T. Bergan's Remembrances:
I was born at Bergan's flour mill in Sigdal in 1840. My parents were Torger Evensen and Gunhild Andersdatter. Father was a miller at Bergan until his death, which occurred when I was between 11 and 12 years old. Mother died three years later. After that I worked at different places until I was 18 years old, when I returned to my home and became a miller. In 1866 I was married to Ragnhild Pedersdatter Braatelien, who was born in 1844. In the spring of 1868 we left Drammen, crossing the ocean to Quebec, where one of our children, a little girl, died. We were on the ocean for eight weeks and three days. Our destination was Iowa County, Wisconsin, where we spent the first year. Next we moved to Worth County, Iowa, where my brother, Anders, lived. There I worked at various places until 1883 when we moved to Wilkin County, Minnesota. I purchased a quarter section of land three miles from Rothsay, where I began farming for myself. In 1886 my wife died and left me alone with eight children. The youngest was a little girl only a few months old. She also died three weeks after her mother.
In 1889 I was married again to Thea Hanson who was born in 1857 in Enebak, Norway. In 1909 we sold our farm and purchased a house in Rothsay where we now live. I have very little to do now as I am almost 74 years old and really don't feel like doing too much. All of the children have grown up. Four live in North Dakota, one lives in Canada, and one lives in Minnesota. Sigdalslag 1914. |
