John Henry DEFRANCE was born about 1725 in French Flanders, France. He died about 1795 in Middletown, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania. He immigrated to Dauphin Co., Penn. before 1740. Reportedly a Huguenot who may have disguised himself as a girl to escape France at the young age of 10. He was a private in the Revolutionary Army, and received a land grant for his service. He was a member of the Northumberland Militia, then enlisted on Dec.7, 1779 in the 1st New York Regiment for duration of the war, and served as a private until May 21, 1783. Army muster records show him in the army hospital at Albany, NY from late 1780 to date of discharge. There is no record of injury. Due to error his name is shown as John Henry Devrance in the New York records. He received 600 acres of bounty land from the State of New York and a US Military Bounty Land Warrant for 120 acres. Note: in the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church records for Jan. 1, 1771, the baptism of Anna De Franz lists her mother and father as Joh. Frans. DeFrance and Elisabeth of Lancaster Co., Elizabethtown John Henry was listed in the 1790 census a resident of Maytown, Lancaster Co.. John Henry was involved in extensive purchase and sale of land in Northumberland County, PA, the center of the Wycoming Valley feud between Connecticut and
Pennsylvania.
