Here are a few highlights on the benefits of trees &� collectively the community resource.
*Urban regeneration.
Most people prefer to live and work in leafy surroundings. Trees and woodlands can help to soften the urban environment and create the qualities which lead to social and economic success.
*Travel and transport
In a tree rich urban landscape, people can feel more comfortable walking and cycling. They are more likely to look locally for recreation and have less need for travel.
*New housing targets
Millions of new homes are built every year "on brownfield" sites in towns. Well placed urban greening can reduce their visual impact and make city living more attractive.
*Land reclamation
Trees can stabilize derelict land and bring it back into beneficial use.
*Best value greening
Substantial physical and financial resources are committed to the management of open space. In many cases planting trees can offer a much more cost effective approach to urban greening.
*Waste minimization
Woodchip waste from urban trees is far to valuable to be lost to landfills. it can be simply used as woodchip, mixed with household kitchen scraps to aid the composting process or used for charcoal and other household products.
*Energy efficiency
Summer shade and winter shelter both bring significant energy saving benefits from trees.
*Global warming
Trees help absorb excess carbon dioxide and counter some of the effects of global warming.
*Healthy cities
Trees are the air conditioners of the city, filtering particulate pollution and making our surroundings healthier. They also provide shade from harmful ultra-violet rays.
*Storm-water run off
Trees can trap rain water on their leaves and slow down urban run-off bollowing heavy storms. Reducing drainage costs, sewer overflows and down stream damage. --Cont.
