FOURTH GENERATION

Patrick Darrington (bef.1765-1821) and Katharine _________ (c.1790-?)

Patrick Darrington was born sometime before 1765, possibly in North Carolina. Very little is currently known about his early life, although family legend suggests that his origins may ultimately lie in Ireland. He first appears in the 1810 census of Burke Co., NC, where he was living with his young wife Katharine _______ , born ca. 1790, and a young daughter. By 1817, Patrick and family had moved to Franklin Co., GA, where he purchased 100 acres of land along a branch of Eastanolle Creek from Wyatt Lankford, who later returned taxes for Patrick in 1820 and later his widow Katharine "Caty" Darrington the following year. The grave of Patrick Darrington, who died sometime during 1821, has not been found.

In the 1821 Georgia Land Lottery, Patrick's four orphans (named in the grant) won land in the 3rd District of Houston Co., GA (later formed part of Bibb Co.), and around 1823 Katharine and her 4 children moved to this new land in middle Georgia. On September 27 of that year Katharine (only in her mid-to-upper 30s) willed property in deed of gift to her son Charles and daughter Elvina (at that time about 14 and 17 years old, respectively), evidently in preparation for her planned remarriage to Thomas Calhoun, which occurred in Bibb Co. the following year on August 27. See Katharine's will to her oldest children.

Patrick Darrington's orphans won yet another land lot in Lee Co., GA during the 1827 Land Lottery. Based in part on Charles' 1894 obituary, he left his mother with her consent at age 14 to go "into the lower counties of this state, where he remained until about the year 1837," suggesting that Charles and perhaps his sister Elvina as well took up residence on their newly-won land in Lee County. Only the family of the eldest son Charles Darrington has been traced subsequently in Troup, Meriweather, and Heard Cos. The remarried Katharine and her youngest Darrington children apparently moved out of the state before 1830, and their fate is not currently known.
