SECOND GENERATION

Joseph Howard Evans (1833-1864) and Pheriba R. T. Futral (1838-1904)

Original signature of J.H. Evans on ration slip.

Joseph Howard Evans was the last son of Joshua James Evans and Rebecca R. Smith, and was born in Henry Co., GA on July 23 1833. Joseph married Pheriba R.T. Futral (born June 5, 1838), daughter of Etheldred Futral and Emeline Jones, on July 30, 1854 in Henry Co. Joseph and Pheriba had 4 children before he enlisted along with his older brother Benjamin Franklin Evans in Company A of the 53rd Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, CSA, under the command of Captain Thomas W. Atkins. Surviving many battles including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness, Joseph was wounded during the battle of Cold Harbor near Gaines Mill, VA, where his arm was amputated in a field hospital. Joseph died three weeks later on June 23 in a Richmond hospital from gangrene, and was buried there in an unmarked grave in Section U, Plot 36 in Hollywood Cemetery. See transcribed service and pension record, and see photographs of the battlefield and grave site.

Joseph's widow Pheriba Evans was officially made guardian of her 4 children listed below in Spalding Co. on December 11, 1864, with her father Etheldred Futral as security. She raised her family in Spalding Co., and later moved to Carroll Co. with her youngest son Charles, where in 1891 she applied for and received a state pension based on her husband's Confederate service. Pheriba died on Feb. 7, 1904, and was buried alone in Pleasant View Baptist Church cemetery there. See Pheriba's gravesite.

On August 10, 1997, more than 133 years after the burial of her husband in Richmond, soil from his grave site was sprinkled next to Pheriba's grave in front of a new memorial marker to Joseph Evans placed there by the McDaniel-Curtis Camp #165 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Carrollton. See photograph of Joseph's memorial and its dedication at Pleasant View.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR DESCENDANTS:In 1998, descendants of Joseph were accepted for membership into both the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans based on Joseph Evans' service. As a result, any other documented descendant of Joseph should have little difficulty in becoming a member of these organizations. Please contact John Worth for further information.
