Widow's Pension Application for Pheriba R.T. Evans, widow of Joseph Howard Evans

Affidavit to be Made by the Widow:
State of Georgia, County of Carroll.
In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for the County of Carroll Mrs. P.R.T. Evans, who being sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of Joseph H. Evans, who was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, and served as a member of Company A, of the 53rd Regiment of Ga. Volunteers; that he enlisted in the said service on or about the first day of June 1862, and was in the Confederate Army up to June 1864.
"She says that she received a letter from the hospital in Richmond, Va. that her husband Joseph H. Evans had died in the hospital, in June 1864, from a would rec'd in the service, and that is the last she ever heard of her husband, Joseph H. Evans."
Deponent further swears that she was the wife of the said deceased soldier during his term of service in the Army, and that she has never married since his death; that she became his wife on the 30th day of July 1854; that Georgia is her home, and was such on the 23d. day of December, 1890, and since said date she has not lived in any other State or locality. Deponent, as the widow of the said deceased soldier husband, applies for the pension provided by Act of the General Assembly of Georgia, approved December 23d., 1890, for the pension year ending February 15th, 1892, and herewith tenders the proof of her right to receive the allowance granted by said Act.

Affidavit for Three Witnesses:
State of Georgia, County of Spalding.
In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for the said County, witnesses E.C. Aikin, M.D. Spence, & W.J. Futral (each known to the said Attesting Officer as truthful, reliable, and reputable citizens), who weverally say under oath, that, from their own personal knowledge, Mrs. P.R.T. Evans of the county of Carroll, State of Georgia, is the widow of Joseph H. Evans, who was a soldier in Company A of the 53 Regiment of Ga. Volunteers. That the said soldier enlisted in the service of the Confederate States (or the Georgia State Troops) on or about the ___ day of May 1862. That while in said service, or by reason of said service in the Army, he lost his life as follows:
"He was wounded in battle at Gaines Mill near Richmond, Va. in the arm. Arm was amputated. Carried by E.C. Aikin to hospital at Richmond, died June 27th from wound or gangrene in wound. E.C. Aikin says he knows the facts because he was in same company & was with him, carried him to hospital after amputation & say him almost daily till he died. M.D. Spruce says he was in same company with Joseph H. Evans, Co. A, 53rd. Regiment Ga. Vols. Mr. Evans enlisted as above stated & was the husband of Mrs. P.R.T. Evans of Carroll Co. at the time and during his service in the army. He was wounded and arm amputated as above stated & carried to hospital by E.C. Aikins. Witness never saw him any more. He never returned home after the close of the war & never heard of afterwards. Witness swears from personal knowledge of the facts. W.J. Futrell on oath says he only knows of the marriage of Joseph H. Evans & of his enlistment and service in the army as stated above. He only knows of his death from general understanding in family and among his neighbors. He knows that he never returned after the close of the war & was never heard of afterwards. He knows that applicant was his wife during said service & she has never married again. We all know.
We further swear that P.R.T. Evans was the wife of said soldier during the service, and that she has not intermarried since his death, and that she resides in Carroll County of the State of Georgia.

I, S.J. Brown, Ordinary in and for the said County of Carroll, State of Georgia, hereby certify that I am acquainted with Mrs. P.R.T. Evans, the applicant for a pension in this case, and know, from my own knowledge, or from positive proof presented to me by reputable witnesses, that she resides in this County, and that she resided in the State of Georgia on December 23d., 1890, and has not lived out of the State since that date. I am fully satisfied that this claim is made in good faith, and that I have caused the applicant and the witnesses to read or hear read the proofs they sign. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of my office, this, the 30th day of July, 1891.

Brown of Carroll County, Ga. my true and lawful attorney in fact, for me and in my name, to receive and receipt for whatever amount of money I may be entitled to from the state of Georgia as a widow of a Confederate Soldier, as stated in the foregoing affidavit; hereby authorizing my said attorney to receipt in my name for any Warrant that may be issued by the Governor, or for any sum of money which may be coming to me for the reason aforesaid. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 17th day of April, 1891.

Evans, who, being sworn, says on oath, that she is a bona fide resident of said county of Carroll, State of Georgia, and that she resided in said State continuously all her life. That she is the Widow of J.H. Evans, who was a Soldier in Company A of the 53rd Regiment of Ga. Volunteers, tha he enlisted in said regiment on or about the month of June 1862 and served in the Army up to June 1864. That he lost his live on the ___ day of June 1864.
"He died in a hospital in Richmond, Va., in June 1864, from effects of a wound which he rec'd in battle in Va., while in line of duty."
Deponent swears that she was the wife of said deceased soldier, during his service in the army as a soldier, and that she has never married since his death aforesaid, and that she became his wife in the year 1854.
I have been allowed a pension as a resident of Carroll County for the year ending February 15th, 1897, and now apply for the pension provided by law for the year ending February 15th, 1898.
