The United Methodist Committee on Relief
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) was created in 1940. The General Conference was so moved by the human suffering of refugees in China and Europe that a day of prayer and self-denial was set, with the offering to be used for the refugees.
Commissioned to respond to the suffering of God's people around the world, UMCOR continues its commission today in more than 80 countries, including the United States. Focusing its work in the areas of hunger, refugee resettlement, disaster response ministries, UMCOR addresses the needs of "the least of these."
Projects that are supported by UMCOR have been carefully screened and selected. Church leaders and local citizens all have important input into the shape and structure of their projects. Funds are allocated based on need and the potential effects of the project. UMCOR works in consultation with other denominations, particularly Protestant and Eastern Orthodox communions, to carry on worldwide programs.
The majority of UMCOR's income comes from the Advance and the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. Our gifts, designated for Advance projects, enable vital lifesaving work to continue. Our gifts to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering undergird all of the programs of UMCOR.
