The Church is in Mission !
Chilhowie United Methodist Church is a mission church!
By paying our World Service apportionment, conference benevolences, and other apportioned funds, our church helps support United Methodist missionaries in the United States and in dozens of other countries. Our church helps build new churches. And our church helps in ministries that prevent the spread of communicable diseases, or train new generations of church leaders.
Through our Advance Special giving, however, we have another chance to share our faith in the power of God's love. Another chance to help people who are hungry in body or spirit. Another chance to be in mission in specific kinds of ministries, or in specific places of interest to our church.
Through the Advance, we can join in a partnership in missions as we "go into all the world and proclaim the goodness to the whole creation." (Mark 16:15 NRSV) `
What is the Advance?
The Advance for Christ and His Church --an official program of The United Methodist Church--was created to give local churches an opportunity to "go a second mile" in their mission giving.
The Advance was born amid the ashes, rubble and devastation of World War II. The General Conference of 1948 launched "The Advance for Christ and His Church" as a call to Christians to help rebuild a shattered world. And we responded!
Through our Advance giving, we sheltered refugees. We rebuilt churches, schools and hospitals. We fed the hungry. And, more than just our dollars, we shared our love and our faith with millions of people whose lives were broken by the war.
Since then, United Methodist have contributed nearly $700 million in Advance gifts for missions in the United States and around the world.
We give to the Advance projects because...
