My Chum & Tigger

Song: You've got a Friend...
by James Taylor

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chum was our very first pet. By accident. We were cat sitting her at our apartment for a friend. When the time came to giver her back, we said "noooo. Can we keep her?" And the rest they say, is history!
Chum, a calico feline, originally belonged to our friend who owned a 'Bait & Tackle' shop, thus the name "Chum'. (Chum means fish food, so to speak) Did this cat love fish? Oh yes she did! A real gourmet when it came to shrimp and lobster!
(One of her favorite places ~ the sink!)
Hubby & I both worked full time and so came the dilemma of getting company for her. She WAS lonely, right?
We hear about a rescue shelter that just happens to have a little tortoise calico kitty who's mom was killed and she was being raised by nuns at a convent. She had been dropper fed and ready for a home. Would we be interested?
We decide to check her out and they bring her to us. She is ugly. Scrawny. Small. But kinda cute... We name her Tigger after Winnie the Pooh and... oh, you get it.
Chum didn't take too kindly to having a friend in HER domain. And she made it quite clear what was hers was HERS! Tigger, being small, respected her wishes til the day Chum died. But we were happy. We even trained them to walk on a leash!
Tigger story falls into the 'Ugly Duckling' one. As she got a bit older, she turned out to be so cute and adorable~ mostly from not ever growing into a full size cat!
WE move to our home 2 years later and have two cats that are afraid of the world. Know the phrase "fraidy cats"? Well, that was ours! They would go out into the back yard but they never left it... except once when Tigger decided the tree next dor looked great to climb. That was HER one and only (and last) venture out in the real world!
Chum ruled the house over her sister, Tig, and also, eventually to her sister dog, Muffin. Tigger never did get too big. Guess the lack of mother's milk during her growth period really affected her size. People would ask if she was a kitten even when she was in her teens!
(Tigger~ in her usual rest position)
Chum lived (and ruled) for 18 years. We had to put her to sleep the day after Christmas 1994. Tigger and Muffin searched for her for months. Tigger would bellow, seeming like she would call for Chum. Muffin sniffed around. We didn't know if they would ever really understand.
Finally, one day, Tigger jumped on the couch, laid down on it and went to sleep. (Something she could never do because it the couch belonged to Chum. ) I guess it was her way of being close to her sister... Then and only then, did we realize she knew Chum wasn't coming home.
Two years later in October, we had to put her canine sister, Muffin to sleep. The heartbreak of losing the second one of your dearest pets is so very difficult. We only had Tigger (and our kids, of course).
The kitty was nursed back to health thanks to nuns in a convent because her mommy got killed lived to the very old age of 21! If these nuns didn't rescue her, she would have died then.. It's unbelievable that she would live the longest!
Early spring of '97, Tigger lay on the rug. She could not get up to eat or drink. It, again, was time to put one of our trust worthy and loyal pets to sleep... We, again, vowed after losing Chum, then our dog Muffin, we could never go through this again. It's so heart breaking to say good bye. No more pets! That's it. Can't go through this any more. It hurts so bad.
6 months later... we went and bought a rottweiler, Angel Baby...
In our home, we love animals too much not to have them fill our home with their love. It is actually a tribute to replace an animal when you lose them. It means they held a special place in your heart. A home with children is great but a home with children AND pets! Now that's a different story. Pets make everyone happy and fill that small, missing void you may not even be unaware of. I know. It filled mine!
