To Muffin,
with love...

Song: Butterfly Kisses...

We rescued Muffin from the North Shore Animal League. She was one of the biggest puppies there and our goal was to find a pup much like our child hood dog, Valentine.

Well, the shelter lied about her age. She was an 'older' pup and would not grow as big as our other dog, Valentine, but Muffin DID grow... wide!

We wanted a smart but gentle, watch dog to protect our home. Smart was not Muffin's forte, but we loved her anyway. BUT! Muffin was very gentle. (So gentle, she would hide under our bed when strangers entered.) I guess with a name like "Muffin", it just wouldn't scare anyone away anyway, so why should she be a 'watch' dog?

We had had one child, our daughter when we 'picked' out Muff. And we had two cats named Chum & Tigger ~ B.K. (before kids..). Muffin fit right in with the cats and her human sister.

Years passed. Our family grew. We had two boys and we were one, big happy family.

Muffin grew, too. Not tall but wide. Guess we learned the hard way table scraps just isn't the right diet for a dog!

At age 3 Muffin looked years older. Everyone would think she was about 10, not just 3 years old... That year, Chum (her sister cat) scratched her eyeball and we almost had to remove the eye or else put her down. She recouped but with a scar line on her pupil blocking her vision for the rest of her days... (And that cat got declawed ~ even though she was 8 years old!)

As she got older, she suffered from the extra weight she had with hip problems and arthritis. Her eyes were getting cloudy, too. If she got out of the yard she didn't go too far~ she couldn't break into any kind of a run because of her legs. She got plenty of love and hugs from this house but the day finally comes as the inevitable does...

It was October and we had to make that horrible decision to put her to sleep. Her legs were failing her. She couldn't get up to even eat one day.

Muffin lived a full life to the age of 14 human years. We buried her in our backyard with a grave marker on it. Her sister cat who scratched her eye is buried there, too. We all cried. We swore we would never, ever go through the feeling of sadness again. No more dogs. Never. That's it!

And the following year in October, you guessed it, we went and got our newest pet... our rottweiler, Angel Baby!
