Today the Gap chain has over 3,000 locations throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and France. Gap stores sell men's, women's and junior's clothing, as well as accessories and fragrances.
Gap has been criticized for human right's violations in their factories, as well as lack of environmental responsibility. Please see the Pros & Cons section for more info.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
As of May 2000, does not purchase leather from India or China, due to the mistreatment of cows there. The Fischer family, who owns The Gap, purchased 230,000 acres of forest in Mendocino County, CA. The family is logging old growth redwoods there. This forest houses the last old growth redwoods still alive outside National Parks.
In 1995, Gap became the first international retailer to agree to independent monitoring of its contractors. Was sued, along with 17 other companies, in 1999, for luring thousands of workers to Saipan, then making them pay $2,000 - $10,000 to work there. The employees were forced to work 70-80 hours/week, were sometimes beaten, forced to have abortions, and housed in crowded, rat infested buildings. They have refused to settle the case. (October 2000)
Gap has a non-discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation. They also offer benefits to all employees' partners, including ones of the same sex. Gap caps are made in the BJ&B sweatshop which violates Dominican law by underpaying it's female workers. The women are also inappropriately touched and the conditions are unsanitary. They are paid 8 cents a cap, which rounds out to be about $40 for 56 hours of work. (-per UNITE)
Gap's CEO (currently Millard S. Drexler), makes about $24,000 an hour, while Gap sweatshop workers in Russia make only 11 cents an hour. That's a Gap.
Gap imported the greatest amount of goods from the CNMI sweatshops in 1995-1999. They imported $237.3 million dollars worth of garments. (wholsale value).
Gap makes clothes in the Par Garment Factory in Thailand. This factory has long been known for its underpayment and mistreatment of workers. Workers are forced to work overtime, for an amount of payment that is below Thai standards. Many women have also been sexually harassed. When, in 1998, some tried to complain by organizing a union, they were fired.

In Indonesia, Gap produces in a plant where women who are menstruating are not given proper respect. One woman was not allowed to go to the restroom, and was made to sit and bleed through her clothes while she worked.

To whom it may concern;

I have recently come to a realization of how important it is to be a
responsible shopper. Before I purchase any more items of clothing, I
have decided to thoroughly research the garment industry. I would be
extremely grateful if GAP would supply me with the following information:

1. A complete list of the suppliers/countries from which GAP purchases its garments, as well as the sweatshop monitoring agency used to monitor the condition of each.

2. Origin of merino wool, silk and leather items used in the garments.

3. Percentage of recycled paper used in the catalog (if applicable).

4. Charities to which GAP donates.

5. What the company does with  slightly damaged clothing when it is
returned by a customer.

6. A list of lawsuits the company has been involved in (if any).

7. List of the fleets/airlines used to transport GAP goods.

8. List of modelling agencies from which the GAP models come.

9. Name(s) of person(s)/group(s)/company(ies) in charge of advertising.

Thank you for your time!

Dear Ms. _______,

Thanks for the reply =)  I've already reviewed the website, but couldn't
find the information I am looking for. I'm interested to know why the Gap is
incapable of supplying the public with the sorts of information I requested.

     Sincerely,
          Carissa Thomas
