Boys & Girls Club

Since 1915, the Kips Bay Boys Club, now known as the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club, has been in the business of helping young people realize and achieve their potential. KBBGC develops the skills necessary in children to survive a complex urban environment. Our goal is to each day help a child "Beat the Streets" and direct them towards productive, caring and purposeful lives.

Service Record

Last year more than 6,500 girls and boys found an oasis in the Bronx at our main Clubhouse or one of the three extension sites. The Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse is located in the Clason Point section of the borough, P.S. 47 and 102 are located in the Parkchester area and C.S. 158 is located in the Morrisania section. The ethnic composition of the membership is approximately 50% Hispanic, 48% Afro-American, 1% Caucasian and 1% other. There are 3,951 boys and 2,627 girls registered as members.

History

1915	The Kips Bay Boys Club established in mid-Manhattan to serve the population of a growing metropolis.
1969	The Club moves from mid-Manhattan to the present clubhouse site in the Southeast Bronx, an area of dire need.
1976	A swimming pool and two classrooms added to the club to provide new programs and more space to accommodate membership of 2,000 boys.
1984	The Club expands to provide space for girls. The new addition includes a 9,000 square foot auditorium/multi-purpose room and an outdoor recreation area. The new auditorium becomes home to Kips Bay's outstanding performing arts program "K Company."
1988	The Board changes the Club's name to the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club reflecting what was already a reality.
1991	"Outreach 91-94" extends the club's operation to six days, establishing satellite clubs at four public schools and increases the participation of handicapped children. Membership rises to 4,000 at the Clubhouse and 1,300 at the extension sites.
1997	The Club completes a two-year capital renovation program. The program includes a new dance studio, lighted outdoor basketball courts, expanded bathroom and locker space for girls, and expanded program space for teens. Membership tops 6,500 and goals are established to register and serve 7,000 inner-city youth in 1998.
